Ghana’s economy records -3.4% growth in Q2 for the first time in 37 years

Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim1Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, Government Statistician

Ghana’s economy recorded a negative 3.4 percent in growth for the second quarter of this year for the first time in 37 years.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the heavy fall is largely attributed to some restrictions on activities in the economy, which virtually came to a standstill during the period as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

With oil, the country recorded a 3.2 percent growth rate in the second quarter.

Speaking to journalists, the Government Statistician, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, said: “From the second quarter of 2020, Ghana’s economy has contracted by 3.2 percent from an oil perspective”.

“From a non-oil perspective, we also saw a contraction in the economy specifically for the second quarter of 2020.

“We saw our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) being GH¢35,590.4 million relative to GH¢36,839.7million that was recorded for the second quarter of 2019.

“For the first time in 37 years, Ghana’s economy has seen a contraction, which indicates that the last time the economy contracted was in 1983 and for emphasis, the oil sector contracted by 3.2 percent and the non-oil sector contracted by 3.4 percent.”

Death toll in twin road crashes now 23

Kyekyewere Accident RemandFile photo

The death toll in two separate crashes in Ghana has risen to 23 in the last 24 hours.

Officials said that three more persons have now been confirmed dead after a truck crashed into two passenger buses on Tuesday — bringing the toll to 17.

Twenty-one others who got injured in the accident which happened at Kyekyewere on the Accra-Kumasi highway, are also receiving treatment at separate hospitals at Suhum, Nsawam, and Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

Authorities say six passengers also died on the spot after the cars they were travelling in were involved in a head-on collision at Gomoa Adam near Gomoa Anteadze on the Kasoa-Cape Coast highway in the Central Region.

The accident involved two passenger cars, a Ford Transit with Registration number GS 6031- 20 and a Toyota Hiace with Registration Number GR 5059-20.

According to media reports, 14 people were involved in the accident, with five people dying on the spot.

Seven persons who were in critical condition were immediately transported to the Apam Catholic Hospital for treatment. One person died in the hospital.

Two others have been treated and discharged, officials said.

Road accidents are a regular occurrence in Ghana, where the poor state of the motorways has been a source of social tension.

Such carnages normally occur on Trans-West African highways according to the Motor Transport Traffic Department (MTTD).

“Obviously when you begin to see trends like that…and as a country, we have the policy to dualize [the roads], and we have not been able to them”, said Director of Planning at the MTTD, Supt Alexander Obeng.

Ghana is learning from China – Bawumia

Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that Ghana is currently learning from the intensive infrastructure development of the People’s Republic of China.

According to the Vice President, there is going to be a significant shift in how business and political engagement will be conducted across the globe hence there is the need for Ghana to learn from the best practices.

Speaking in a symposium organised by the Embassy of Ghana, China the Vice President revealed that, “Ghana is learning from the Chinese, especially in the transport sector. The adaptation will play a role in our government transformation initiative such as One District One Factory and by opening up important transport roads for marketing our domestic product.

Dr Bawumia also asserted that Ghana can take advantage of the new normal campaign. “We are aware of the COVID 19 and the new normal which is gradually being created and it’s implications on business. COVID 19 has reset the clock of engagement and the way things are going to work going forward. There is going to be a great significant shift with how business and political engagement will be conducted across the globe. Ghana-China relations can ride on the back of the new normal to create viable political, economic, social and cultural practices that will define our future in the post-COVID-19 era.”

The symposium was organized to climax the sixtieth (60th) anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China.

The Relations between the two countries dates back to 1960 when the countries first established diplomatic relations. Since then Ghana has provided substantial diplomatic support to the PRC with the PRC reciprocating with material support for Ghana’s development. In the 1960s President Nkrumah lobbied for the PRC’s reinstatement in the United Nations.

Bawumia holds talks with Bill Gates on polio immunisation

Vice Presiden Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his team in a virtual meeting with Bill Gates

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday, September 14, 2020 held discussions via zoom with Microsoft founder Bill Gates on Ghana’s progress on immunisation against the new circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2).

The discussion according to Dr Bawumia also centred around the lessons from Ghana’s policy response to COVID-19 and the country’s digitisation strategy.

“It was a good exchange of views and he congratulated Ghana for the strides we have made on several fronts. I also thanked him and the Gates Foundation for their successful work in the fight against polio and other diseases,” Dr Bawumia shared via Facebook.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have over the years taken it upon themselves to immunise children across the globe to eradicate polio.

Ghana had been polio-free for over a decade until recently where some few cases have been recorded.

Health Professionals are currently visiting homes immunising children below five years to return the country back to its polio-free status.

National Association Of Public Health Students commend John Mahama

Former President, John Mahama

The National Association of Public Health Students, wish to commend on the good policies of the National Democratic Congress with regards to health and student’s welfare. During the manifesto lunch of the NDC, the leader and the flagbearer of the party H.E John Dramani Mahama and his running mate Prof. Jana Naana made it clear that the next NDC government will increase maternity leave from three months to four months, seven days paternity leave, free primary health care amongst others. These ideas are highly commendable and must be supported by all because infant mothers would now have if not enough time for their babies but appreciable time for their babies and themselves.

Primary health care is a whole-of-society approach to health and well-being centered on the needs and preferences of individuals, families, and communities. It addresses the broader determinants of health and focuses on the comprehensive and interrelated aspects of physical, mental, and social health and wellbeing (WHO). Primary healthcare teams not only address the needs of the individuals but are also looking at the community, especially when addressing social determinants of health. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the integration of primary health care with public health approaches (Van weel et al., 2008). Studies in other developing countries showed the considerable potential of primary health care to reduce the large disparities associated with socioeconomic deprivation (Gwatkin,2001). The free primary health care would provide equal health care service for all irrespective of the financial status or the geographical location of a patient. Countries like Rwanda, Botswana, and South Africa are comfortably practicing primary health care with a robust health care system.

We however commend the NDC for their brilliant health policies and the association will hold them accountable if they fail to deliver.

The association also commends the idea of paying fifty percent of tertiary fees hopefully next academic year and providing tertiary students with laptops to enhance electronic or virtual learning. As far as COVID-19 is concerned, this has been the best policy ever concerning education. They have realized the challenges faced by the ordinary Ghanaian, and we think this is the best way to help reduce the burdens of parents and to also enhance E-learning.

We, however, see the NDC manifesto to be the best as far as health and education are concerned, and it is our greatest hope that they would deliver as said if the mandate is given. Thank you

Signed

Claudius B. Angsongna

Residents of New Kyeiase have appealed to telecommunication firms to extend mobile services to the area. The residents assured the Telcos of their preparedness to provide the needed site for the construction of a mast in the community.

The people, who for ages have been without ‘network’, made this appeal during the annual Social Auditing Durbar at Supom, New Kyeiase in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District in the Eastern Region.
