Big names in govt popping up in Togolanders’ road blockade’ – South Tongu MP

KOBINA SOUTH TONGUMP for South Tongu, Kobina Mensah Woyome

The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Tongu, Kobina Mensah Woyome, has called on the government to sit up and beef up security in the region to prevent further activities of the Western Togoland secessionist group.

This follows the mounting of road blockades on major entry points to some parts of the Volta Region, including the South Tongu Constituency of the region by Western Togolanders.

The group mounted the blockades on Friday dawn at Tefle junction and Bakpa-Tademe.

Speaking in an interview with Class News’ the South Tongu MP said:

“What is happening now, looking at the scheme in which it has occurred, the coordinated nature of the whole activity here, Mepe, Atimpoku, I hear Afiefe and several other places at a go, at the same time, and the attacks on the police in this manner, it baffles me a bit.

“I don’t think the security will go to sleep and just relax and not be able to be on top and ahead of anything like this.

“Because, the way it happened, it means they might have sat, planned or deliberately, people who ought to act, didn’t act; people who must be acting and preventing them from happening simply just didn’t want to do and, so, for big names to be coming up like this, whether true or not true, which calls for some investigation anyway, it leaves so much to be desired and too many question marks.”

The South Tongu MP condemned the action of the group and the people behind its actions.

“Does it have some political undertone? Is it because the hearsay is that this is the stronghold of the opposition party and, so, let’s cause some confusion and disaffection so, maybe, people don’t go to the polls? Is that the plan? It’s just unfortunate”, Mr Woyome said.

“Now, people are hurt, but I’m aware that even a woman was shot at and, so, they’ve picked up her belongings including her ID card to chase her to the hospital to go and look out for her and see how she’s faring.

“You can see blood stains on the ground and all that; that for me is uncalled for, it must not be happening.

“We’re in a country that I know that we have a very good security system in place but unfortunately, the way it’s going, it’s leaving too many question marks on our minds. The government must sit up,” he noted.

Mr Woyome further called for investigations into the matter.

“Should we say that we cannot trust in our security system anymore? That we should be here and somebody comes to attack us and goes free without picking intelligence and preventing it from happening. It leaves too many questions unanswered on our minds and I think that is a serious matter, it’s not like the group is not known…”

“There are better ways to go about this thing, not necessarily the blocking of roads, even if you should block the roads, I don’t think you should go to the extent of attacking police stations to the extent of shooting law enforcement agents, and then hurting them, and as a result, being attacked in response”.

“All these things are needless, we need to get into this matter”, he said.

2 shot in ‘Western Togoland’ standoff with soldiers

Gun.pngFile Photo: Two people were shot after the armed group exchanged gunfire with the soldiers

At least two people have reportedly been shot by military men deployed to Juapong to restore calm to the area after persons believed to be members of the Homeland Study Group mounted roadblocks in the area at dawn today September 25.

Starrfm.com.gh gathers the armed group exchanged gunfire with the armed forces after which some two bystanders were hit by bullets and subsequently taken to an unknown destination by the officers.

“The guy just said when they were shot, the military men took them and they don’t know whether they are being taken to the hospital,” the eyewitness said.

An eyewitness on the ground told Starr News that the persons who blocked the roads are believed to be about twenty-two years of age.

Calm has however been restored to the area, with vehicular traffic gradually getting back to normal.

The incident is happening barely few weeks after the group erected signboards in Somanya claiming the area as within its territory.

The signboards which have since been removed by the Police had inscriptions “Welcome to Western Togoland” for travelers heading towards Somanya from Accra, and “You are leaving Western Togoland” for travelers traveling in the opposite direction”

The HSGF, a group championing the secession of parts of Ghana along the border with Togo, declared independence for the territory they call ‘Western Togoland’ on November 16, 2019.

The leader of Western Togoland independence, Charles Kormi Kudzodzi, announced the separation of Western Togoland from Ghana after a meeting in the Volta Regional capital, Ho. Many of its members have been arrested and facing Prosecution.

Surrender and stay away from Western Togoland within 24-hours – Ghana Police, military warned

The group warned the Military and Police to leave behind their weapons

Masterminds of the Western Togoland independence have issued a warning to the Ghana Police Service and the military to stay indoors till further notice or surrender peacefully to the Western Togoland Security forces.

This is coming after the people behind the Western Togoland agenda succeeded in blocking major roads leading to the Volta region-Kpong, Juapong and Sogakope-burning vehicle tyres and demonstrating for its independence this morning.

The statement pointed out that the restoration to Western Togoland statehood, under the leadership of Togbe Yesu Kwabla Edudzi I, is being consolidated.

As such Togbe Yesu is the Chairman of Western Togoland Restoration Front (WTRF), the political wing of the Western Togoland independence struggle.

“Roadblocks to assert its sovereignty are all over the Southern sector. Vehicular and passenger movements have come to a standstill”, the statement sighted by MyNewsGh.com which did not have a signatory said.

It continued saying “for how long? Until Ghana agrees to come to the negotiation table, with expected UNO facilitation. All political activities within the new State are banned with immediate effect”

The statement also emphasised that certain radio stations are temporarily designated Western Togoland (WTL) state radios till further notice, and all media houses within WTL are to focus their programming predominantly on WTL issues until further notice.

“All Ghanaian security forces are ordered out of WTL within 24 hours and MUST NOT to take any weapons or ammunitions along with them.

“All detainees of Western Togoland independence struggle are ordered released immediately and all court proceedings relating to that are ordered terminated with immediate effect,” it added.

Gavel Gavel NewFile photo

Seven persons who robbed a Supreme Court Judge and a banker of their vehicles, a laptop and other personal effects at gun point, have been sentenced to a total jail term of 175 years by an Accra Circuit Court.

Nene Kwadwo Tetteh, aka Chairman Obed, who was not present while judgement was to being pronounced, has been sentenced to 25 years in absentia.

Welbeck Oppong, an accomplice, who escaped from lawful custody and still at large, was also sentenced 25 years in absentia.

The rest of the accused persons who witnessed the trial namely: Nana Kwabena Ackah, Isaac Agyemang aka Batman, Kweku Boaning, Frederick Kwasi Boateng aka Boat and Kofi Debrah were jailed 25 years each by the court after a full trial.

This was after the court presided over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh, a High Court Judge sitting with additional responsibility as a Circuit Court judge, found them guilty at the end of the trial.

They were variously charged with conspiracy to commit crime to wit robbery, three counts of robbery and having possession of stolen property.

Meanwhile Delali Alomatu, an accomplice, who pleaded guilty before the commencement of the trial in year 2016, was serving 24 years jail term.

Prosecuting, Inspector Samuel Ahiabor narrated that the complainants in the case were Supreme Court Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkonor, who was then a Court of Appeal Judge and Mr Anthony Kodua Bediako, a Banker.

Inspector Ahiabor said the accused persons were self-styled businessmen.

Prosecution said on December 8, 2016 at about 8:30 pm, the first complainant, Justice Torkonu was on board her official vehicle, Toyota Fortuna vehicle with registration Number GM 6852-13 and was returning from a night church service.

Upon reaching her residence at Baatsonaa-Spintex area, she was attacked by a gang of armed robbers numbering more than six who attacked and robbed her of her vehicle, one Apple Macbook laptop valued at GHS 1,300.00 and one iPhone valued at GHS 600.00, cash of GHS 900.00, US 50.00 and her three Bibles and bolted.

The robbers not satisfied, further drove Justice Torkonu’s vehicle to the house of Mr Bediako (2nd complainant’s ) at Anyaa, where they further attacked him at gun point and robbed him of his Hyundai Santafe Sport Wagon vehicle Number GR 714-16, cash of GHS 350.00 and Huawai mobile phone and bolted.

Prosecution said on July 16, 2017, Tetteh and Ackah who were in the company of his criminal syndicate namely; Kofi Newton, Nana Osei, Robert Tackie, all at large and removed the original number plates of the two vehicles to wit; Toyota Fortuna vehicle from GM 6852-13 to GR 2431-16 and Hyundai Santafe from GR 714-16 to GW 8622-16, attempted to sell both vehicles.

Prosecution said the would-be buyer alerted police because they had previously defrauded him of cash in the sum of GHS 25,000.00 under the pretext of selling another vehicle to him but bolted with the vehicle after collecting his money.

The Prosecutor said the police managed to arrest three of Tetteh’s accomplices namely; Robert Tackie, Kofi Newton of the premises of Tesano Ecobank, but Tetteh managed to escape.

Prosecution said July 14, 2017, intelligence led to the arrest of Tetteh as the leader of the robbery incident. Tetteh however escaped from custody. He was however picked up this year (2020) by the Police

Further Investigations into the case disclosed that Tetteh and Ackah together with his accomplices now at large, sponsored criminals by providing them with weapons and ammunitions to embark on robbery expeditions within Accra and Tema Municipalities.

Prosecution said when the accused persons were successful, they brought all the booty namely vehicle, TV Sets, and various sums of money to Tetteh to share.

Thereafter, Tetteh and Ackah also re-spray the vehicles and sell them.

On November 28, 2017, Prosecution said intelligence received at the Regional Police Command Accra to the effect that the accomplices of Tetteh and Ackah are hiding at Kade in the Eastern Region.

According to prosecution, a team of detectives were dispatched to Kade where they managed to arrest Alormatu and Kweku Boaning.

During interrogation, they admitted the offence and mentioned Agyemang who had also been arrested in a similar robbery case by the Sakumono Police as their accomplice who led them to the house of the Supreme Court Judge and thereafter handed over the Toyota Fortuna vehicle to Tetteh as he sponsored their robbery activities and Tetteh further gave them cash, the sum of GHS 4,000.00 as part payment. They further mentioned Yaw Sofeh and Kwamena Oppong now at large as their accomplices.

Prosecution said on February 7, 2018 intelligence led to the arrest of Welbeck Oppong at Apedwa in the Eastern Region.

Prosecution said Fredrick Kwasi Boateng, a.k.a. Boat, was also picked up by the Police at Akwatia in the Eastern Region. Kofi Debrah was also nabbed at Kasoa as those being part of the robbery syndicates.

After investigation the accused persons were charged with the offences.

Adamu Sakande is dead

Adamu Dramani Sakande died in London on Tuesday evening

Adamu Dramani Sakande, a former Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has died in London after a persistent heart problem.

The former MP, GhanaWeb gathers died on Tuesday evening.

“Hon Adamu Dramani Sakande joins the land of the silence ones this evening in London. He was a great father and an uncle,” a family told theghanareport.

The ruling NPP former lawmaker who was convicted of perjury and forgery was reported to have been flown out of Ghana for medical attention in 2013, after he was granted pardon by former President John Dramani Mahama because his health had deteriorated.

But Sakande denied the Daily Graphic report at the time, stating that an impression was created as though he had been bedridden and rushed abroad for medical attention.

“Yes, I am due for medical check-up in the United Kingdom, but the impression is not as bad as being suggested by sections of the media,” the former MP said.

The Accra Fast Track High Court, in 2012, sentenced Adamu Dramani Sakande to two years imprisonment after he was found guilty of false declaration of office, perjury and deceit of a public officer.

A Bawku-based cattle dealer, Sumaila Bielbiel, had challenged the status of the MP for Bawku Central, Adamu Daramani Sakande in the law-making body due to his dual citizenship, something the 1992 Constitution frowns upon.

Sakande spent time receiving medical attention whilst in jail at the cardiothoracic unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, but was granted a presidential pardon on December 31, 2012, by the then President, John Dramani Mahama based on medical grounds.

Sakande contested the Bawku Central seat on the ticket of the ruling NPP in the 2008 election and snatched it from Mahama Ayariga, the incumbent.

He polled 20,157 of the ballots ahead of Ayariga’s 17,385 following a second recount which saw ballots conveyed from Bawku to Bolgatanga specifically for that purpose.

The 1992 Constitution of Ghana forbids persons with dual citizenship from becoming lawmakers.

Adamu Dramani Sakande was 58-years-old. He left behind a wife and two children.

CPP is a disgrace, let’s punish them with no vote – Sekou Nkrumah

Sekou Nkrumah is a son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Sekou Nkrumah, a son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah has urged Ghanaians not to dignify the ‘disgraceful’ actions of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) with a single vote on December 7, 2020.

Sekou Nkrumah is unhappy that the party has chosen a man he claims to be an ‘imposter’ as Chairman and wants Ghanaians to ignore the party in the upcoming elections.

“CPP is a disgrace parading an imposter as vice chairman, let’s punish them by not giving them a single vote”.

Sekou’s dislike for Onzy Anwar aka Onzy Kwame Nkrumah stems from his notion that the latter is an imposter parading as son of Nkrumah whose 111st birthday was marked on Monday, September 21, 2020.

In the immediate aftermath of the CPP congress held last month, Sekou lashed out at the party and its officials for electing Onzy as first Vice Chairman.

While commending the party for retaining Ivor Greenstreet as flagbear, Sekou Nkrumah criticized the party for not honouring the memory of founder by electing Onzy.

“So these useless CPP people have no shame? How can they elect a fraud, an imposter as vice chair! Onzy Anwar is a full blooded Egyptian so how can this shameless con artist hold a position in a Ghanaian party?…how could they have vetted that imposter and given him the go ahead?”, Sekou quizzed on his Facebook timeline.

Sekou Nkrumah further wrote: “There is something very wrong with that party! Or is the problem deeper than that? Are we Ghanaians without shame? Have we lost our decency? This indeed is the most shameful day in the history of Ghana!”

“If Ivor and the CPP want to be taken seriously then this is a great opportunity to do so! By exposing that fraud among them they will be giving a clear message that integrity stands tall in the corridors of the party! Ivor and his cronies in the CPP should bow their heads in shame! They have not only disgraced the party, but also have publicly dragged the name of Kwame Nkrumah into the mud!” his post read

Today in Sports History: DK Poison wins Ghana’s first boxing title after beating Mexico’s Ruben Olivares

D.K’s Poison’s bout with Mexico’s Ruben Olivares

Ruben Olivares was making the ‘1st- defence of his WBC Championship.

Fight Purses, {Ruben Olivares $80,000} – {David Kotei $15,000 – plus an additional $5000 for British Broadcast fee’s}

The 28-year-old Champion still had the ‘punching power’, but his speed had diminished with age. Reports were flying through Los Angeles that Ruben had been partying more than training.

Also, Ruben did not regard David Kotey as a difficult challenge, and believed he will have no problem with the little known number one WBC Featherweight contender, and predicted he will win easily.

The 24-year-old Ghanaian had been training in Los Angeles for 3-weeks, and the muscular Kotey looked very good in sparring sessions. ‘DK Poison’ was fast and had a very good left hook, to go along with an explosive right-hand.

Francis Clottley, Kotei’s trainer, had brought in Cheikie Ferrera to help in preparing Kotei for the Champion.

The Fight

The ‘fast-handed David Kotei opened up in round one with a fast on-slaught and stunned the ‘slow-starting’ Ruben Olivares with a right-hand, and then dropped the Champion with a left hook.

The young and powerful Ghanaian controlled the early rounds, with quick hard right hands, and then backed away looking to counter with his hard left hook.

Despite being outspent, the 28-year-old Champion dug in and started whacking away with his left-right body punches in the middle rounds. The Champion was able to back Kotei up and closed

the gap on the scorecards by round eight.

In a back-and-forth fight in rounds nine and ten, Kotey was able to land fast one-two’s, and back off before being countered. While the Champion continued to throw hard left-rights to the body.

But by round eleven, Olivares looked to be ‘out-of-steam’, as Kotei scored with quick left-rights to the head, and then used fresher legs to avoid any of the Champion’s counter-punches.

In the twelfth round, both fighters clashed heads, and the Champion came away with a bad cut over the left eye.

The Challenger used that cut, to go aggressive, as he scored with several sharp punches on the partially blinded Champion.

Entering round thirteen, the challenger was ahead on the scorecards and fought defensively, and smartly boxed

by jabbing and using his quick legs to stay away from a ‘stalking’ Olivares.

The Champion, realizing he needed to win the last two rounds big, put together a late rally in rounds fourteen and fifteen by scoring with more punches, but they lacked any power to hurt the younger David Kotei.

Scorecards;

Referee: Rudy Jordan………145-144 (Ruben Olivares)

Judge, Dick Young………….143-142 (David Kotey)

Judge, Chuck Hassett………144-143 (David Kotey)

Most of the ringside press, had David Kotei winning by a 144-142 scorecard.

Associated Press…………..142-141 (David Kotey)

Los Angeles Times………….144-141 (Ruben Olivares)

United Press: ‘The Champion was sluggish, and showed little skills last night. The Challenger was the better boxer, and was a clear winner.” UPI Scorecard 144-141 for David Kotei.

David Kotei: “I had a fight plan, and it worked. Ruben was excellent as a Bantamweight, but he’s not as good

at Featherweight.”

Ruben Olivares: “He was very fast early in the bout, but I took over and won nine of the rounds. I was sure that the last two rounds won it for me.”

The 7861 pro-Olivares fans at The Forum erupted in boo’s after the decision was announced, and rioted. Several hundred fans stormed the ring and attacked David Kotei, his cornermen, and the Ghanaian contingent.

What Next?

David ‘Poison’ Kotei was supposed to make the ‘first defence’ of his Championship versus Shig Fukuyama on December 21, 1975, but contractual problems could not be corrected.

So ‘Poison’ took a non-title bout versus ‘tough’ Featherweight David Sotello 38-12-2 (16 KO’s) in Accra, Ghana. He won a very close 10-round decision in front of 30,000 Ghanaian fans.

D.K. Poison successfully defended the title against Flipper Uehara and Shig Fukuyama, before losing it in his third defence on 6 November 1976 by unanimous points decision to Danny “Little Red” Lopez in a fierce fight in Accra, Ghana.

Elsewhere;

On this day 20 September 2007 (Exactly 13 years ago today) Ghana’s Black Queens crowned their embarrassing appearance at the 5th FIFA Women’s World Cup in China with a 2-7 bashing at the hands of Norway in their last Group C game played at the Hangzhou Stadium.

The Queens conceded three goals before the break and a further four in the second half before skipper Adjoa Bayor and Florence Okoe pulled two face-saving goals back.

Coach Isaac Paha’s decision to start Gladys Enti in post ahead of number one Meimunatu Sulemana proved disastrous on yet another day that the Queens lacked vision and everything to upset any opponent. Enti who made elementary mistakes, picked the first ball from the net as early as the third minute when Lane Stroklokken sent her flat-footed in a goalmouth scramble.

The Norwegians, who by the victory finished as group winners with seven points, controlled the game as they caged the Ghanaian midfield in the process.

Ghana, however, came closest on the 28-minute mark when the skipper Adjoa Bayor tested the victor’s goalkeeper Bente Nordby with a long-range drive that drove applause from the 54,000 filled Hangzhou Dragon Stadium fans that have kept faith with the abysmal Queens.

Then came Tahiru Rumanatu’s effort eight minutes later. The player gifted from a fine move initiated by Bayor and cooked by Anita Amankwah, but with keeper Nordby well beaten, the debutant squeezed the ball to the side netting to make nonsense of the screams that preceded her effort.

The eventual Most Valuable Player of the match, (MVP) Ragnhild Gulbrandsen who hit a hat trick taught Ghana how to do it with her first for the day when she profited from an offside trap that left the defence rudely exposed.

The third goal was to follow five minutes later with Ane Stangeland Horpestad connecting from the spot kick. Isabell Herlovsen, Gulbrandsen, Lise Klaveness, had their turns to wrap up the demolition exercise of the Queens.

The Queens lost all three matches at the competition in which they were making their third appearance. They lost 1-4 to Australia and 0-4 to Canada in the other group games.

Norway and Australia advanced to the round of eight from the group.
