Boy jailed 25-yrs over GH¢10 shares painful ordeal

File photo of a man in handcuffs

Abdullah Mohammed now 27, who was jailed 25-years for allegedly stealing GH¢10, has recounted his painful ordeal and how he was wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit.

Appearing on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he lamented his ordeal in the prison was hell because the food they were given was nothing to home about.

He said the ordeal of prisoners in Ghana he noted is horrible and did not reform people who are supposed to be reformed.

Abdullah Mohammed was under 16 years, when he was handed a 25-year jail sentence in the Kumasi Central Prison for allegedly robbing someone of GH¢10.00.

Aside being jailed 25 years as a juvenile, he was also sentenced to an adult prison, where he has already spent 10 years of his jail term. Abdallah Mohammed, 25, had exactly eight days to celebrate his 16th birthday.

Recounting his ordeal, he disclosed how he was arrested by a mob, together with a supposed accomplice, Seidu Elliasu, 25, (trader) at Akwatia Line, Kumasi in the Ashanti region for allegedly attacking one Moro Haruna and robbing him of his GH¢10.00 and bunch of keys.

Abdallah, 15 years old at the time, and his alleged accomplice, Seidu were arraigned before court and were charged on two counts; (a) Conspiracy to commit crime contrary to section 23 (1) of Act 29/60 and (b) Robbery, which is contrary to section 149 of the Criminal Code 1960 of ACT 29.

However, it was revealed through an initiative from Crime Watch and Rainbow Radio that the young man was not informed about the arrest and prosecution, contrary to the provision of juvenile criminal justice law, which required the presence of the parents or guardians of the juvenile before questioning.

According to details provided in court, the complainant, Moro Haruna, who lived in Amoeba, a suburb of Kumasi on June 23, 2009, while returning home from a visit, met both accused persons, Abdallah and Seidu, who attacked him physically and ordered him to surrender everything on him, but according to him (Moro Haruna), he refused to comply with the order.

He said, Seidu then held his shirt against his neck while Abdallah searched his pocket and removed cash of GH¢10.00 and bunch of keys.

But Mohammed says he knew nothing about the incident.

According to him, on the day of the incident, he was only passing through the area with one.

During cross-examination, the complainant, Haruna and the first accused, Seidu, were said to have admitted they did not know the suspect Mohammed.

On July 27, 2009, the court, presided over by His Honour, Emmanuel Amo-Yartey, read his judgement and sentenced the accused persons to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour.

Reacting to all these, Mohammed insisted he was mistakenly arrested, tried and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour for a crime he didn’t commit at age 16.

His ordeal, he added was not only painful but traumatic and would not wish that for anyone.

Meanwhile, Mr. George Owoo, Programmes Manager at the Human Rights Advocacy Centre has described the incident as unfortunate.

According to him, Mohammed can file a case against the state because his rights have been abused.

The judgement handed Mohammed he said was unlawful.

He explained the maximum sentence for Mohammed at the time was between three months to three years months and not 25-years and even with the three years it should on crimes including robbery, murder and other high related crimes.

I saw that NPP flagbearer had turned into a goat in Kumasi – Prophet Adu Boahen

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana

Host of ‘OGYIE MMERE on Angel 102.9 FM in Accra, Prophet Johnson Adu Boahen has vowed that his head be cut if the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not drop votes in the Ashanti region on a scale never seen before in its history in the upcoming presidential election in December.

The prophet who claims to have done up to 90% of the spiritual work that helped the NPP and its flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections before they won that polls massively says what has been revealed to him by God this time round is shocking and would spell the doom of the party in its stronghold.

Speaking with Yaw Nimako on Kumasi-based Angel FM monitored by Mynewsgh.com on Tuesday morning, he said the happenings in the spiritual realm currently do not favour the NPP and that the people of Ashanti region will shock their darling party in the upcoming election.

He said that he saw in a vision a masked man nicely dressed in NPP paraphernalia (flag bearer) with a huge following in Kumasi suddenly turned into a goat after the crowd insisted that he unveils himself since they could no longer follow a faceless person.

“Immediately he turned into the goat, the whole crowd dispersed; this means that the people of Ashanti would for the first time in their history refrain from voting for the NPP on the scale that they have always done and that would cost the party a lot,” he interpreted his vision.

Prophet Johnson Adu Boahen also indicated that the NDC could spring a surprise and win the election in a manner that will surprise everybody.

Ghana doesn’t legally exist – Kosi Kedem

Kosi Kedem 2020Kosi Kedem

In the wake of some group of people in the Volta Region demanding independence for a Western Togoland state, Kosi Kedem, a former Member of Parliament for Hohoe South has argued that Ghana does not legally exist.

“There’s no union document on the so-called union between Ghana (Gold Coast) and Togoland. De facto, they are one [unit], but legally, Ghana does not exist,” Kosi Kedem said on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday.

He explained that Ghana as a country is made up of the Gold Coast and the UN Trust Territory of British Togoland, adding that, for a union to be constitutionally legal, a union document needs to be legalized.

Kedem said, “Resolution 1044 which recognizes the recommended union, the same UN Resolution 1044 invited the British Government which was the administering authority to take such steps as necessary to bring about the union.”

He continued: “So, if a Trust Territory, being ruled by the UN and a colony being ruled by Britain are to come into union, what do you do? You have to sit the two of them down for them to determine what type of government they want to have, what will be their responsibilities, obligations and benefits. No such thing was done.”

Kosi Kedem further stated that the main cause of the fight for independence by the secessionist groups is that there is the absence of the union document that details the factors of the union.

He indicated that the plebiscite that resulted in the independence of the Gold Coast was facilitated by the United Nations mission visiting French Togoland and British Togoland.

He explained further that the plebiscite was to determine the political fate of both colonies which also gave two options, that is, a union with the Gold Coast or an integration of both colonies.

Kosi Kedem revealed: “The problem is that there was a plebiscite as a result of the UN Visiting Mission which came to the two Togos; French Togo and British Togo in 1955, and they recommended that there should be a plebiscite in British Togoland to determine their political fate. Majority of Togoland said that they wanted a union with an independent Gold Coast…the UN General Assembly rejected the offer of the union and forcibly integrated Togoland with Gold Coast.”

He said a union would have maintained the sovereignty of Togoland which would have given them the sovereign equality with independent Gold Coast under the same government but under the integration, Togoland lost its identity which was completely consumed by the Gold Coast. The union was thus forced on Togoland.

Kedem stated that no meeting was held to determine the kind of government to be instituted, its responsibility, obligations as well as the benefits to be derived from the union.

“Instead, on the eve of independence, around 4th March, the British Government with the help of the CPP government just sent troops to Togoland and occupied the place on the pretence that they were quelling a rebellion,” he noted.

Kosi Kedem stated that the British government refused to implement the terms and conditions highlighted in Resolution 1044, which was to ratify the union.

He consequently called for a dialogue between the government and the secessionist group and further called for the “rectification of the constitutional blunder” which can end the debate of secession and unite the country.

“Violence, confrontation, repression are very powerful, but dialogue negotiation and engagement are far more powerful than violence because violence does not solve any problem, dialogue does. It gives you a long-lasting solution to the problem,” the former MP added.

It was a ‘cat and mouse’ relationship – Nana Konadu speaks on relationship with late mother-in-law

Mother Of Rawlings 599x375.pngLate Victoria Agbotui

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has described her relationship with Victoria Agbotui, her late mother-in-law, who passed away over the weekend aged 101, as a ‘cat and mouse’ situation.

She explained that they sometimes had sweet moments and at other times it was bitter but to her, all these were sweet moments for her.

“It was a cat and mouse relationship. Sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter but for my side, always sweet,” Nana Konadu said on Asaase radio’s Sunday Night when she was asked what her relationship with her late mother-in-law was like.

Nana Konadu indicated that the demise of her late mother-in-law has not been easy for her family, especially her husband, Jerry John Rawlings.

“He is coping. Of course, it won’t be easy because his older brother passed before the mother and it was difficult for him; for your mother to go, that’s a difficult situation…”

She explained that when she first met Madam Victoria Agbotui in 1976, during a formal introduction as the wife-to-be to JJ Rawlings, Madam Agbotui was very upset.

According to the former first lady of the Republic of Ghana, her mother-in-law felt that someone else should have married JJ Rawlings. She added that she didn’t have to work hard to pass that resistance from her in-laws.

Nana Konadu recounted that Rawlings knew his family and knew what he wanted, so he didn’t let the resistance stand in the way of the love story.

She added that Rawlings had to persuade his aunties to speak to his mother on his behalf.

“He [Rawlings] had to tell them who I am and the family I come from and if anybody was going to complain then it shouldn’t be them but from her [Konadu] family…and so one of the aunties took us to one other ‘mama gas’ and she agreed to go and do the engagement because he [Rawlings] insisted,” Nana Konadu narrated.

Nana Konadu indicated that at the time, she thought that the resistance would not be a problem but eventually it did.

When asked whether there were class expectations from her family as to the person she should get married to Mrs Rawlings indicated in the affirmative, and also added that ethnicity played a part, because of the Asante and Ewe stereotype.

“It was my uncles and aunties who were creating the whirlwind and Opoku Ware at the time said the Ashantis had always had their aliens as Anlos so what’s the big deal, but eventually they were resolved,” she told Nana Yaa Mensah, who sat in for the regular host Kwaku Sakyi-Addo.
