Court grants interim injunction preventing EC from gazetting John Amewu as MP-elect

John Peter Amewu is the MP for Hohoe Constituency.

The Ho High Court presided over by Justice George Buadi has granted an interim injunction restraining the Electoral Commission from gazetting John Peter Amewu as MP for Hohoe Constituency.

This was after an ex parte application was argued in court by Tsatsu Tsikata for the applicants who hail from the towns who were prevented from voting in the parliamentary elections in the Hohoe constituency.

The aggrieved persons went to court with an enforcement of their fundamental human rights specifically their right to vote.

Mr Amewu has become the first candidate from the NPP to win the parliamentary seat in Hohoe since 2000.

He won multiple polling stations with huge margins.

Sene West elections: Court throws out NPP suit against EC and NDC

Lawyer Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare who represented the NDC addressing the media after the ruling

The Wenchi High Court has thrown out a case brought before it by the New Patriotic Party against the Electoral Commission and the National Democratic Congress on the Sene West Parliamentary Elections.

The court ruled that the said case lacks merit, reason it was dismissed.

The NPP has also been fined an amount of GHS 20,000 for wasting the time of the court.

The Sene West Constituency’s Tato battor polling station B ballot box is yet to be counted after one Christian Nukpeta snatched the ballot box when the election results were being counted.

Although Christian Nukpeta was arrested immediately, the parties involved noticed that the seal of the ballot box belonging to the NPP had been removed, leaving that of the Electoral Commission and NDC.

As a result, Lawyers for the NPP’s Sene West parliamentary candidate, Joseph Markay Kuma, immediately sought an injunction from the court to stop the EC from counting the ballot papers in the box.

The ballot box was then locked up at the Techiman Police Headquarters.

However, counsel for Joseph Markay Kuma withdrew their motion of injunction on the declaration of the results as filed in their petition.

The court on Thursday quashed the case and by this, the EC can now go ahead to either count the snatched ballot box or conduct fresh elections in that polling station only.

Man, 54, pours acid on 18-year-old girlfriend, mother

Both victims have been hospitalized and undergoing treatment.

An 18-year-old girl and her mother have been hospitalized after an acid attack allegedly by a 54-year-old man.

The suspect, Nana Yaw Mante, a businessman allegedly poured the acid on his ex-girlfriend and mother while in a room at Awukugua in the Okere District of the Eastern Region.

Both have been hospitalized and undergoing treatment.

The suspect was convicted few months ago by Koforidua Magistrate Court “A” to a fine of Ghc1,200 and ordered to pay a compensation of Gh1000 to the victim for filming and circulating sexually explicit videos and pictures of the victim.

Background

The 54-year-old Businessman was put before a Koforidua Magistrate Court for filming and circulating nude videos of his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend.

He was charged for obscenity contrary to section 281(i) B of the Criminal Offence Act,29/60.

The Prosecutor, Sergeant George Defia told the Court presided over by His Worship Nana Osei Assibey on Tuesday, May 19 that the convict and the victim, a Senior High School dropout are both natives of Awukugua in the Okere District of the Eastern Region.

According to the prosecuting Officer, two years ago, Nana Yaw Mante met the victim who had dropped out of school due to financial challenges, and under the pretext of assisting her to go back to school, took undue advantage and entered into a sexual relationship with her.

Family of the victim became suspicious and confronted the accused person but he denied having sexual relations with the victim. The relationship hit the rocks due to disapproval and pestering by the family. However, in 2019, the convict convinced the victim and they reunited.

Nana Yaw Mante, for fear of losing the victim again, told her that he had taken her to a shrine and the gods were demanding to see her nakedness.

In November 2019, he lured the victim to Dawu near Adukrom-Akuapem where he recorded series of sexually explicit videos of themselves.

He later circulated the videos of the victim to her Aunty and two other men he alleged were also dating the victim. The videos went viral on social media in February 2020.

The victim reported the incident to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) at the Regional Police Headquarters in Koforidua.

He was arrested on February 7, 2020 and in his caution statement admitted recording the sexually explicit videos of the victim and sharing same.

The receivers of the videos confirmed to Police during interrogation that the accused sent it to them but denied circulating it on social media.

EU observers give indication of how 2020 polls were manipulated

Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission

European Union observers in the just ended Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Ghana have given pointers to how results were manipulated.

According to observers, results were not publicly displayed in 17 polling stations they observed.

The observers however noted, “voting was conducted in a generally peaceful atmosphere and voting procedures were mostly followed, including the biometric verification of voters”.

“Furthermore, presiding officers appeared to have difficulties completing the result forms. The polling station result forms were not publicly displayed in 17 polling stations although party agents received signed copy of the result form in all cases,” the EU observers said in their 12-page report on the election.

The report also praised civil society organisations in the country.

“Ghanaian civil society has a strong presence and a leading role in electoral observation.

Domestic observation is organised, credible and well perceived by stakeholders.

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), a network of 43 organisations advocating for democratic institutional development and human rights, leads the national observation activities.

“CODEO, with support from the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD Ghana), amongst others, deployed around 4,000 observers on election day. CODEO issued reports on registration, campaigning and incidents, and set up a parallel vote tabulation (PVT) exercise. The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) deployed some 700 observers”.

It also raised concerns over the collation process in the polls.

“Collation of results at the constituency level was observed in 35 constituency collation centres with many of them being visited repeatedly. Collation process was less well organised and less transparent often due to a lack of detailed procedures, inadequate facilities and overcrowding which at times led to agents and observers not having a clear view of the procedures and the filling in of result forms.

“Instances of unrest and tension were observed in Asawase, Sunyani West and Techiman South constituencies. The results were collated in the presence of party agents and observers and key transparency measures were adhered to”.

Blame Akufo-Addo if I’m harmed’ – Amidu as he warns government

Martin AMIDU SHOCKKEDSpecial Prosecutor, Martin A.B.K. Amidu

Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has said if he is harmed in any way or killed, President Nana Akufo-Addo must be blamed for it.

According to him, he has been the target of threats of harm ever since he left office in connection with his corruption and anti-corruption risk assessment report on the controversial Agyapa Royalties deal.

Mr Amidu, who resigned from office as the Special Prosecutor on Monday, 16 November 2020, served notice to the Akufo-Addo government in an audio note that if the attacks on him do not cease, he would be forced to come out to defend his integrity “without fear or favour” and damn the consequences.

“Please, I have said since I left office that I was not going to do any fresh interviews about my resignation, I was not going to talk to the press. I am being pushed by so-called responses to me, which contain blatant falsehoods, to speak but I do not want anybody to blame me when I speak out and it becomes unpalatable”, Mr Amidu warned in his audio note.

“So, either the attacks stop or I’ll defend my integrity, even if that means my death. It is something I won by dint of hard work from the PNDC to date and I’m not going to allow anybody, not even the president, to pull that integrity into the mud”, the former Attorney-General said.

“I am a poor man who tries to lead a straight and narrow life and crusaded against corruption without asking for payment, so, they will try to destroy me”, the Citizen Vigilante noted, adding: “Anybody who tries to fight corruption must be aware from the beginning that corruption will fight back and all that is going on is corruption fighting back”.

To him, “it is demonstrating that the whole rhetoric about fighting corruption was mere rhetoric”.

“The time for reckoning has come and nobody should push me. I repeat; nobody should push me,” Mr Amidu warned again.

He said: “They should tell their people, who they wrongly briefed to be telling lies about me, to stop before I decide to respond and when I decide to response, I’ll do so without fear or favour, even to the extent that if my life will be taken for speaking the truth and defending the Constitution of Ghana, as by law established, I’ll do so”.

Mr Amidu stressed that as a private citizen, “nobody can control me and I have a constitutional right too, to defend myself and the Constitution of Ghana, as by law established”, indicating: “Corruption and corruption-related offences are forbidden by the Constitution and assessment of anti-corruption is something allowed under the Constitution and must not be subdued under personal attacks”.

“It must stop”, he emphasised.

Mr Amidu said his critics and detractors must know that he is a “Citizen Vigilante”.

“That is what they must remember”, adding: “All these threats about bugging me, armed robbery, burning my house, I’m aware”.

According to him, several attempts by him to speak to the Minister of National Security, Mr Albert Kan Dapaah, on the threats against him, have hit dead ends.

“I tried to call Kan Dapaah, he didn’t pick it and I got a former national security advisor to contact him and tell him that, and I know the persons involved, I can name them but I reserve it for the meantime”, he said.

“I put my life for the republic of Ghana and the president will be responsible for anything that happens to me”, Mr Amidu charged.

He said there have been a plethora of threats of robbery and arson against him. “The intelligence is there and I called the minister of national security but he didn’t pick and I got a former national security advisor to speak to him and this fact is now known and I say that the president will be responsible for anything that happens to me”.

“I’m a Ghanaian and I don’t fear anything and, as I said, to die in the cause of fighting corruption is what I started with President Jerry Rawlings on 31st December 1982 and I’m not going to leave it because some people think that they can threaten me. I don’t give a damn about that.

“…If they don’t stop, I’ll respond”, he threatened, saying: “As to what I’ll do, I reserve that for myself but as I said, whatever happens to me, I lay my life for the republic of Ghana and the president has a constitutional duty to protect me. I don’t need any security in my house or to follow me. And anybody who makes an attempt, he will have himself to blame”.

Mr Amidu also revealed that his kinsmen are ready to come down south in his defence.

“People have called and want to come in truckloads from Bawku and I told them that what they are hearing is not true because, as a citizen of Ghana, I’m entitled to say my mind and defend the Constitution.”

He wondered why there is so much vitriol against him from people in government following his release of the Agyapa report.

“The fact that you are in government doesn’t mean that when you are dissatisfied about a report, you go after the person or the fellow”, he said, revealing: “The Minister of Finance has been my friend for years; why will I go for him? When I was writing the report, didn’t he come to this house? Was he not here on 21 October? What did I tell him? Why is he now churning our information about me and targets and all that? Should I come out? Let’s stop it and I say let’s stop it before we wash dirty linen in public.”

Demolish Ashaley Botwe ‘towel of Babel’ now – Franklin Cudjoe

Franklin Cudjoe wants the building demolished

Franklin Cudjoe, the President of IMANI Africa has demanded the immediate demolition of a building under construction at Ashaley Botwe in Accra.

Photos of the tall building has surfaced on social media with calls for the authorities to act to avert any form of danger.

The height and design of the building has led to questions about its structural integrity with several Ghanaians expressing shock over what they conceive to be shirk of responsibility.

The building is situated at Ashaley Botwe which falls under the Adenta Municipal Assembly. The Assembly is being blamed for looking on while the ‘death trap’ is getting higher.

In a post on social media, Franklin Cudjoe compared the building to the biblical Tower of Babel.

He appealed to the Adenta Municipal Assembly to tear down the ‘dangerous’ looking building.

“Tower of Babel. Must be demolished now to save lives”, he posted on Twitter.

Some social media users are also wondering if the owners of the building had the required permit to put up such a structure.

The rapist has been put under guard at the AGA hospital

An armed robber and a rapist would live the rest of his life without a penis after it was bitten off by his victim while receiving a ‘Blow Job’ after a robbery operation.

The victim quickly reported to the police and thereafter went to Anglogold Ashanti Hospital for treatment but few minutes later, the suspect also came to the same hospital and she alerted the security men and the suspect was arrested and put under guard at the hospital.

He was later identified and when police visited the crime scene, the cut penis was retrieved and sent to the hospital for preservation.
