65-year-old woman gang-raped, killed in Juba

The 65-year-old woman was gang-raped and later killed

The police in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, has confirmed that a 65-year-old woman was gang-raped and later killed by armed robbers in the city’s Hai- Referendum residential area on Wednesday night.

Police Spokesperson Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin, told Radio Tamazuj Friday that a group of armed robbers broke into the sexagenarian’s house, searched it, failed to get anything to loot, gang-raped, and then killed her.

“The day before yesterday we registered an attempted robbery that resulted in the killing of a 65-year-old lady. The robbers broke into her house, searched for anything they could get but after they didn’t get anything, they raped her and in the process, they killed her. I think because she was crying,” said Gen. Justin.

The perpetrators have not been arrested but Gen. Justin said investigations have been launched and that police will track down the criminals and bring them to book.

“We have not arrested anyone yet but we have started gathering information and we will soon track down these criminals,” he said.
Meanwhile, according to one of the deceased’s neighbours named Gune Richard, they heard the old woman screaming, but they were too frightened to come to her rescue. They later found her lying dead in the morning.

“At night when we were sleeping, we just heard the sound of people coming to our neighbour and after we heard her screaming. It was like they were beating her so we had some of them saying keep quiet, we will kill you,” Gune narrated.

“We got shocked and were fearing to come out as you know these days if something happens at night you cannot come out. If you come out, you may be killed.”

Coronavirus: New variant can be transmitted through the eyes – Dr Gbene

Global pandemic, Coronavirus

Dr Simon Gbene, the Western Regional Director of the Veterinary Service, has disclosed the new COVID-19 variant in the Western Region is transmitted predominantly through the eyes.

The medical officer indicated that it is not enough for one to wear a face mask to protect himself or herself against the new COVID-19 variant but, must ensure everyone they come in contact with are doing same.

He said the genetic sequence on some samples had proven that the new variant was present in the Western region and urged residents to be cautious.

“One thing I have seen about the variant is that it can be transmitted through the eyes, the mouth and the nose. Now, we have to protect our eyes too”, Dr. Gbene said in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show aired on e.TV Ghana and Happy 98.9 FM.

The doctor argued that with this new mode of transmission also comes the severity of infections. He indicated that people infected by the new variant suffer extra symptoms. “The symptoms are just like malaria and the only difference here is that you suffer the loss of smell and this new variant is more infectious than what we know”.

Advising the public on ways to avoid contracting the new variant, Dr. Gbene noted, “The only way you can protect your eyes is by respecting the social distancing policy. With this new variant, we need to protect our eyes. If someone has the virus and he speaks to you without the mask on and particles of saliva lands on your eyes, you will be infected.

“You need to protect your eyes and you need to be very careful where you go, especially if those you’re meeting with are not wearing face masks”, he reiterated.

A new variant of the novel coronavirus has been detected within the country.

This was disclosed by President Akufo-Addo during his 22nd national update on the fight against the pandemic in Ghana.

“Recent genomic sequencing undertaken by our scientists have established that some arriving passengers tested positive for new variants of COVID-19,” he said.

A myriad of strains has, over the past few weeks, been detected in many countries triggering concerns about the propensity of the newly developed vaccines to aid in the combatting the impact of the pandemic.

We are disappointed Parliament rejected Ayariga’s motion to absorb fees – NUGS

NUGS president, Isaac Jay Hyde

The National Union of Ghana

Students (NUGS) has expressed disappointment in the rejection of the motion that public tertiary institutions fees for 2021 academic year be absorbed by the government.

The motion from the Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, was shot down in a voice vote on Thursday evening.

According to the President of NUGS, Isaac Jay Hyde, their hopes have been squashed as they were looking forward to having at least a reduction in fees this year.

Reacting to parliament’s rejection of Ayariga’s motion, Mr Hyde stated that, “We are disappointed in the outcome. At some point in time after the moving of the motion by the honourable member, NUGS sent a petition together with some allies student leaders to support the motion so that we could give further particulars to it.

“We were hoping that even not all, at least, some percentage of a sort or certain components of the school fees could be looked at,” he added.

Mahama Ayariga in his petition was seeking legislative approval pursuant to Order 50 (1) to have the fees halted as a result of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to him, “many people have lost their jobs due to the economic consequences of the outbreak of COVID-19, which has necessitated government granting subsidies in the provision of water and electricity.”

“… Workers of private schools in the education sector have not earned income in close to a year. Most parents and students have not been able to work to save funds to be able to pay fees,” he said to buttress his claim to get tertiary students fees absorbed.

Akufo-Addo, Mahama leave naysayers surprised, spotted interacting in public

President Nana Akufo-Addo and his predecessor John Dramani Mahama

President Nana Akufo-Addo and his predecessor John Dramani Mahama have been pictured at the funeral of Jerry John Rawlings showing mutual respect to each other despite their ongoing court case.

At the funeral of Jerry John Rawlings who was buried in Accra on Wednesday, Nana Akufo-Addo walked to Mr Mahama to exchange a few pleasantries before leaving the Black Stars Square where the event took place.

In what looked like a quick yet good conversation, the two men are seen intensely focused and listening to each other.

While the details of their conversation are not public knowledge, It is yet another testament of Ghana’s growing democracy.

As many already know, former President and presidential candidate of the NDC in the 2020 general elections, John Dramani Mahama is yet to officially concede to Nana Akufo-Addo after the NPP flagbearer was declared the winner of the last election by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Mahama argues that the declaration by the EC is not a true representation of the electoral figures and has since proceeded to the Supreme Court to challenge the declaration of Nana Addo as President and winner of the 2020 elections.

What is Mahama seeking from the Supreme Court?

The petitioner, Mr Mahama, is seeking a rerun of the December 7, 2020 elections between himself and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) because he believes both leading candidates did not obtain 50 percent of the valid votes as required.

His petition is based on the results declared by Jean Mensa, the Electoral Commission Chairperson on 9 December.

Mr Mahama is also seeking the following reliefs in his petition.

1. A declaration that EC Chair Jean Mensah’s declaration of the election results on December 9, 2020, was in breach of Article 63 (3) of the 1992 constitution.

2. That based on the data contained in the declaration, no candidate satisfied the requirement of the stated Article, to be declared President-elect.

3. A declaration that the declaration is unconstitutional, null and void, and of no effect whatsoever

4. An order annulling the Declaration of President-Elect Instrument 2020 (c.I. 135) dated 9th December 2020, issued under the hand of the EC Chair.

5. An order of injunction restraining Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from holding himself out as President-elect;

6. An order of mandatory injunction directing the EC to conduct a re-run of the election with he (Mahama) and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as candidates.
