African-Americans are the cause of their own woes – Diplomatic expert

International Diplomatic Consultant, Farouk Al-Wahab

Experienced International Diplomatic Consultant, Farouk Al-Wahab has insisted that the disunification of the African race in the United States of America (USA) is a cause of the numerous problems they face.

He made this statement on the back of the death of George Floyd, an African-American man who died during a police arrest in Minneapolis. Protests over police treatment of Floyd and other African Americans quickly spread across the United States and internationally.

To him, if African Americans and African immigrants were united in the USA, they would have been a priority group in the country and incidents like George Floyd’s would not be recorded.

“The Spanish are united and have become more respected in the USA than the blacks. Why because they are united and accepting of anyone who speaks Spanish no matter the country they come from.”

He made this statement in an interview with Happy 98.9 FM’s Afrifa-Mensah, host of ‘Epa Hoa Daben’. “African Americans to an extent are the cause of their own woes,” he said.

Citing various instances to support his assertion, he mentioned that the African-American does not respect and embrace their fellow blacks. He indicated that it was not uncommon to see an African-American police officer treat a fellow African roughly and worse than a white police officer would.

Farouk Al-Wahab, citing his own situation talked about how an African-American license instructor failed him when he was applying for a driver’s license in the USA only for a white instructor to pass him for the license. “The white instructor told me he saw in my details that I had been at their facility in the morning and was failed. But he was not surprised at my failure when he saw the name of my previous instructor, Clarke who was an African-American. “Clarke will fail every African-American. That’s what the white instructor told me.”

He opined that even the court system in America refuses for an African-American Judge to preside over a case involving an African-American suspect. “The black judge will jail a black man severely and excessively than a white judge.”

The diplomat reasoned that the African-American will never refer to an African from the continent as “my brother” but ask you whether you’re an African and treat one badly if you are. “Because they can’t embrace the African and embrace each other, they will always suffer.”

The only way for African-Americans to progress in the USA is for them to love themselves and be united rather than being hypocrites and suffering from delusions.

$500,000 bail set for George Floyd’s murderer

Derek Michael Chauvin George Floyd’s Murderer

A $500,000 bail has reportedly been set for Derek Michael Chauvin, the white police officer who killed George Floyd, a Blackman who was unarmed when he was arrested.

Chauvin was charged on Friday, May 29, 2020, with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Floyd was accused of using a fake $20 note to buy cigarette in Minneapolis.

After his arrest, Chauvin was seen in videos that have since gone viral, kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes, leading to his death.

“I can’t breathe, man,” Floyd can be heard saying in the new video. “Please, let me stand. Please, man,” Floyd, 46 was heard saying in the video.

However, Minneapolis police said Floyd “physically resisted” the officers.

Autopsy

Surprisingly, a preliminary autopsy revealed that the combined effects of Floyd being restrained, potential intoxicants in his system and underlying health issues, including heart disease, contributed to his death, pointing to a natural cause of death.

The autopsy report says there was no physical findings to support strangulation as the cause of death.

However, Floyd’s family, according to their lawyer, Benjamin Crump, is upset that Chauvin wasn’t charged with a more serious offense.

“We expected a first-degree murder charge. We want a first-degree murder charge. And we want to see the other officers arrested,” the family noted in a statement.

If convicted of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, Chauvin faces 25 years in prison on the first charge and up to 10 years on the second, reports say.

Mass Arrests, Protests

There have been mass protests across at least 30 cities in the US over the death.

Over 100 people were reportedly arrested in Chicago on Friday night in relation to the protests, with 200 others including a CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez arrested in New York.

There have been reports of casualties including a 19-year teen believed to have been killed.

What you need to know about Fela Kuti(Founder of Afrobeats Music)

Fela Kuti is hailed as a god of Afrobeats and hero of original Nigerian music. Two decades after his death, Fela Kuti’s home has been turned into a museum.

But his music career, though undoubtedly pure Nigerian has its roots firmly Ghanaian.

In 1967, he came to Ghana to think up a new musical direction. That was when Kuti first called his music Afrobeat.

In 1977, Fela and the Afrika ’70 released the album Zombie, a scathing attack on Nigerian soldiers using the zombie metaphor to describe the methods of the Nigerian military. The album was a smash hit and infuriated the government, setting off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic, during which one thousand soldiers attacked the commune.

In 1979, Fela performed this song himself in Accra, Ghana when Gen. I. K. Acheampong, a coup leader, was the Head of State of Ghana. He was banned from ever performing in Ghana because of the upheaval that ensued. This song was said to have sparked streets protest in Ghana, which was against the then military regime.

Despite the massive setbacks, Fela was determined to come back. He formed his own political party, which he called Movement of the People (MOP), in order to “clean up society like a mop”. Apart from being a mass political party, MOP preached “Nkrumahism” and “Africanism.

The musical style of Felá is called Afrobeat, a style he largely created, which is a complex fusion of jazz, funk, Ghanaian/Nigerian highlife, psychedelic rock and traditional West African chants and rhythms. Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native “tinker pan” African-style percussion that Kuti acquired while studying in Ghana with Hugh Masekela, under the uncanny Hedzoleh Soundz.

The late Nigerian music legend, Fela Kuti invented the famous music genre name Afrobeat in Accra in 1968, a music lecturer at the University of Ghana has said.

According to Prof John Collins, the Nigerian legend was the pioneer of the genre.

Afrobeat, which is currently seen as the most popular form of music in Ghana, and Nigeria, was born out of Fela’s dislike for late American music star James Brown.

“The word Afrobeat was invented in Accra by Fela, it wasn’t in Nigeria. He actually coined the name because he wanted to distinguish his name from the soul song,” he said.

The Music Lecturer at the University of Ghana explained that Fela “had a love-hate relationship with James Brown, so he decided to distance his music from James Brown because it’s not James Brown’s music” even though they had some similarities.

Explaining how the name was coined, the music Prof said Fela happened to be listening to James Brown in a Ghanaian club but got annoyed and said: “no I’m going to call my music something different’.”

After his marriage to his 27 wives, he brought his wives to Ghana for their honeymoon.

Fela Kuti’s relationship with Ghanaians is constantly talked about. One Ghanaian who enjoyed Fela’s patronage is the under-discussed sycophant Kwaku Addaie, also known as Professor Hindu, a Ghanaian magician who offered Fela spiritual guidance.

But that relationship suffered trust issues. According to John Collins, an author, it was at Professor Hindu’s instigation that Fela embarked on a course that would lead to his being charged with currency smuggling. Hindu’s magical powers failed to make the 2,600 pounds worth of bank notes invisible at the critical moment.

Another instance of Fela’s gullibility with Prof Hindu was the testing of a juju bulletproof vest. Fortunately, his brothers urged him to try the vest on a goat first. The goat died instantly from gunshot injuries.

Whichever way, he did love Ghanaian music and our people. His second wife, Sewaa is an example of this love.

Heavy rainfall hits Penyi 3 days after arrest of spiritualists who ‘hijacked’ rain

Residents of Penyi and its environs were left in shock as heavy rains which lasted for over an hour took over the town Sunday, amidst lighting and thunderstorms after a long period of absence.

The rain comes just three days after two young spiritualists were busted and beaten by residents of the town for using voodoo deities to prevent rainfall in the town and its environs in the Ketu North Municipality.

Many residents believe that the rains could not have fallen if the two spiritualists were not busted and shamed for the evil act.

The rains which poured on Sunday, May 23, 2020, is a great relief for farmers whose large acres of crops were dying on the fields due to no rainfall.

BACKGROUND

On May 21, 2020, GhanaWeb broke the story of two young spiritualists who have been using voodoo deities to prevent rain from falling in Penyi

The worrying situation however, forced traditional leaders in the town to do an open consultation of the gods and as a result the name of the two spiritualists were revealed by the chief priest.

Angry residents upon hearing the name of these spiritualists launched a manhunt for them and finally apprehended them in their respective hideouts, beat them, humiliated them and handed them over to the police.

They have however been since released from police custody as the case cannot be dealt with by the Police due to its spiritual nature.

Mitigating the Plights of Tertiary Students-Mr Vincent Larrey

By Mr.Vincent Larrey|| University of Ghana

Mr.Vincent Larrey

On the 21st of March, 2020 I published an article indicating that the University Management and Board of Tertiary institutions should table the plight of students of all public institutions by refunding part, if not full, academic and residential fees of the “covid-19” semester.

Notwithstanding, I also emphasized that whereas direct refund could actually not be possible, the said refund should be credited to the subsequent academic semester. The balance brought forward – that is the percentage of the amount to be paid for the newly academic semester – will ensure that the fees of the said semester is reduced thereby alleviating students from financial difficulties.

There was a need for such a call since user fees and others like it charged on students in the beginning of the semester were not fully utilised during the second semester due to the covid-19 break. This, i suggested, a comprehensive dialogue between the Board of Vice Chancellors and the Government of Ghana will do.

Interestingly, fast forward 17th May, 2020, I chanced to meet many advocates who share my thoughts. They had come to the realization and arrived at the same conclusion of mine based on deliberations and consultations with some key stakeholders of the education sector.

In effect, as of yesterday, the SRC did issued a communique justifying that it was contending with the above matter and that, it is working closely to get it resolved. Since public Universities are government agencies with non-profit motives, funds should be utilized efficiently and effectively, also with the interest of students. The students’ body promised to keep students abreast with the aftermath. We pray and hope that the students representative body, in pursuant of their mandate, will be able to come out with a sounding victory in their pursuit of students welfare and interest.

Moreover, we binge and purge; the African way of tackling issues. It is obvious that the challenges pecked with the E learning modules rollout by Uni-management are in frivolity, a tooth ache to many students. How strategic could a system full of flaws and without any flexibility be used for grading our students and be described as the best? Most students cannot access the internet platforms due to no internet connectivity or mobile network challenges in their geographical area. Others are also limited because they do not have smart phones, laptops or PC’s. Even those who have are still at a disadvantage because the 5 gigabytes bandwidth allocation to them by Vodafone is scanty considering the number of programs on the e-Learning platforms to run. Worse of all, the Sakai platform where assessment is undertaking freezes, even during periods of interim Assessments (IA).

Today we have a system that do not listen to the voice of the masses. Even worse of that, as far as human nature is concerned, let us not be tempted to claim that the ‘user fees’ has been allocated to the E-learning experience.

In conclusion, even though refund in cash is not plausible;however, the case presented by some students are valid on the basis that subsequent fees alleviation may be possible. This we look forward to experiencing in next academic semester.

P/s: Without any malice my take on the issue of refund, is tailored at objective introspection and circumspection of the challenge. We should not subject the validity of channeling students plights to political gains and or scores.

Ellen Amoah

A 17-year- old General Arts student in Form Two at Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School, Ellen Amoah, has had her lower lip bitten off by a ‘violent’ Form Two student of Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.

At about 9:30 pm the same day, the suspect started a quarrel with the younger sister of the victim called Akua and when the victim who was attending to the call of nature at a public toilet got to the scene, the suspect turned to her (victim) and began to insult her too.

“I collected 50 pesewas from my mum to attend to the call of nature and when I got out, I saw Itikan insulting my sister so I told her to escort me to the toilet. As soon as I said this, Itikan called me ‘sickler, you are the one I am looking for,” she recounted.

She claimed before she could utter a word, Itikan and her other sister rushed on them and started beating them while their mother was allegedly standing nearby watching them fight.

The victim said the mother of the suspect allegedly held her hands at the back while her daughter punched her repeatedly.

“I felt a sharp pain on my lower lips and when I said ‘Itikan has bitten off my lips, the suspect’s mother told me she wished her daughter had chewed off my mouth’,” the victim alleged.

The victim was later rescued by her brother, Richard Amoah, who rushed to the scene and took her sister home.

She was rushed to the County Hospital at Abrepo for treatment after which her brother lodged a formal complaint at the Suame Police Station where the statements of both the victim and the suspect had been taken.

Meanwhile, a source at the police station that confirmed the incident said the suspect would be given a police enquiry bail before she would be arraigned.

CID Police brutalizes student for chasing his wife

Hayford OseiHayford Osei

An officer with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service at Donkro Nkwanta in the Nkoranza South Municipality has allegedly brutalized a student of University of Education, Winneba, for allegedly flirting with his wife.

The victim, Hayford Osei, who suffered multiple cuts on his nose and mouth, is currently nursing his wounds.

The offending officer has been identified as Ebenezer Antwi, but the authorities at the Donkro Nkwanta Police Station refused to comment on the issue.

The only response they gave when DAILY GUIDE contacted them was that investigation was ongoing and they could not comment further.

According to information, Hayford’s elder brother used to date the lady at the centre of the issue but broke up with her before the lady dated the police officer with whom she now has a baby.

However, sources say anytime she sees Hayford, she demands money from him because she used to be his elder brother’s girlfriend.

On May 7, 2020, at about 11:00 pm, Hayford, who was doing online examination on his phone due to the closure of schools as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, said he received persistent calls from Serwaa demanding GH¢5 to buy pampers for her baby.

However, the persistent calls from Serwaa was disrupting his work on the phone, so he asked her to stop calling him and promised to give the money to her later in her house.

“So, I went to her house at about 11:00 pm and she gave me a chair to sit on. But all of a sudden, somebody gave me a hefty slap on my face from behind. I fell down and the person continued to give me hefty blows till blood streamed on my face while the lady stood aloof for his husband to brutalize me. I lost my phone in the process. I had to run into the nearby bush to escape death,” he narrated.

He said he lodged the case with the same police station where the suspect is stationed, adding “I was afraid he might not receive justice so I reported the issue to the media as well.”
