What is Nana B doing in SHS classroom when parents have been banned – Ghanaians ask Akufo-Addo

Nana B and his team addressing students in a senior high school

About a month ago, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced plans to restore educational activities in phases. For Senior High School students who are yet to sit for their WASSCE, the presidential directives banned parents and guardians from visiting their wards, even in emergency situations.

On the back of this, however, there is massive outrage on social media platforms after the National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, is seen in a picture addressing some SHS students in a classroom.

Nana B, as he is referred to in political circles, in the picture was not alone. He was captured in the company of his team – about five men – who also took turns to address the students.

According to some social media users who took to their various handles to berate the issue, the school in question is Kumasi Anglican School (KASS) in the Ashanti Region.

Per his positions in the ruling party, some twitter users deduced that Nana B only met the students to campaign ahead of the December polls.

With some questioning the adherence to safety protocols at the meeting in question, others have called for strict sanctions against the NPP executive.

However, Nana B has corroborated the several accounts of the story in a post on his Facebook page.

He has explained the reason behind his presence in the school with his team.

His post read; “Today in Ashanti Region I had the opportunity to tour some Senior High Schools within the region together with the Ashanti Regional youth organizer Mr. Dennis Kwakwa as part of monitoring of the Voter registration exercise.”

“The process was very smooth in all the institutions I visited, the students expressed excitement for having the opportunity to register and show appreciation by voting for H.E Nana Akufo-Addo & the NPP.”

It is not yet clear whether or not school authorities gave permission for the said tour in the schools.

Nigerian with new voter ID arrested at Aflao border

Nigerian Voter IDEmmanuel Philip is in the custody of the police

The Aflao Sector command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested one Emmanuel Phillip, suspected to be a Nigerian by nationality, with the new Ghana voter ID card.

The Command, stationed in Ketu South in the Volta Region, nabbed the suspect on Monday, July 6 when he attempted to illegally enter Ghana through the main Aflao border.

A statement issued by Assistant Inspector Felix Klu-Adjei on Thursday said a search conducted on him found the new voter ID card.

Upon interrogation by the Aflao Sector Commander of GIS, Chief Superintendent Frederick Baah Duodu, the suspect said he lives with one Jerry Azametsi, a native of Aflao, and his wife, Abigail Togbor.

He confessed that the two had persuaded him to register and they even stood in as guarantors for him.

After invitation to assist in investigations, Mr Azametsi confessed that he aided his Nigerian friend who lives in Togo but visits regularly to register for the new voter ID card. He admitted that he only asked him to take advantage of the registration exercise and get the card.

“The Aflao Sector Command of the GIS has since handed over the prime suspect and the two guarantors to the Aflao District Police for further investigation and subsequent prosecution.”

Politics is not about looks – NPP man rebukes Wontumi for attacking Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman NewProf Naana Opoku Agyemang, NDC running mate

A key member of the communications team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Anom Boateng has expressed his disappointment in the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP for speaking in a disparaging manner about the running mate of John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

In an interview with Kwame Afrifa Mensah on the ’Epa Hoa Daben’ show on Happy98.9FM, he said, “There is no sense in what Wontumi said about the woman. If the person is qualified but she is in NDC and can do the work, what are you going to do with her looks? It is time we tell our people. I don’t like some of these comments.

Wontumi should know that she has family members who may belong to the NPP. And then you come out to condemn her looks? Must we use the appearance of people in politics?

If for example, she has a good intent to give all Ghanaians say, 1000 dollars one day, do you think your comments will compel her to do so?”

Francis Anom Boateng was of the view that any scrutiny of John Mahama’s running mate should be based on her qualifications and not her personal life or her looks.

“Looking at her demeanour, you can tell she is a good woman at home; a good wife. I don’t know how you can falter that woman. But can you say that she can be a very good vice president? That is what we are talking about. The academic achievements do not translate into economic emancipation”, he added.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has laughed off the appointment of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as the running mate of the NDC Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, the appointment of the learned professor brings no additional value to the NDC ticket, saying that even loudmouth comedienne Afia Schwarzenegger would have been a better choice.

Deputy MASLOC CEO in vote-buying scandal during NPP primaries

Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakaria, CEO, MASLOC

Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) in their Corruption Watch report says Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakaria, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Microfinance and Loans Centre (MASLOC) was involved in vote-buying during the recently held NPP Parliamentary primaries.

Abibata Zakaria was contesting against Farouk Aliu Mahama, son of the late former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama for the Yendi seat. She lost.

According to the findings, Hajia Abibata Zakaria facilitated the use of MASLOC money to allegedly induce NPP delegates and hopefully secure their votes in December 7 polls.

The CDD’s Corruption Watch investigations thus uncovered illegal use of state resources for personal gain.

On Thursday, May 21, 2020, Hajia Abibata Zakaria distributed GHC1,000 state cash under the guise of MASLOC loans to NPP delegates of Yendi constituency where she was a parliamentary aspirant for the June contest.

She told the NPP delegates in a video available to CDD Ghana that although MASLOC loans were not yet to be distributed, she ensured that as deputy CEO of MASLOC, loans to her constituents were not only distributed to them, but also the number of recipients were increased above what was permitted.

She added that a parliamentarian seeking to develop their constituency has to lobby the government, so “whoever comes to seek your mandate as MP, his or her links with people in government will put development to his or her people”.

“Though this gathering is not a political rally for me, there is no way we will do this without letting you know why we brought [it] here. Here is my Northern Regional Manager, he’s aware that MASLOC gives to a maximum of five groups in the Northern Region, but I’ve not regretted the fact that Yendi alone has been honoured with 35 groups. If I’ve not done so, you’ve the right to blame me because I can’t have such an opportunity and not help you my people,” Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakaria said.

She is also reported to have given three bags of NPK fertilizers to each delegate between June 12 and June 14.

When contacted by CDD Ghana’s Corruption Watch, Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakaria, admitted to the findings but stated that she did not err because the delegates applied for the loans the same way as was required of any other group.

“Of course, there were delegates part of the beneficiaries but as to how many delegates they were, I cannot tell because it was a mixture of delegates and non-delegates,” she told CDD.

When questioned about the timing which suggested vote-buying, the deputy MASLOC CEO said that she didn’t see it as such.

“…I didn’t use state money because the people applied for the loans,” she further stated. “As for the fertilizers [it] is one of the interventions I do for the people of Yendi and if you follow closely they will tell you the kind of interventions that I [have been sending] to the constituency since 2017,” she told Corruption Watch in a telephone interview.

Farouk Aliu Mahama polled 244 votes in the contest; Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakaria, polled 210; and Baba Daney, a chartered accountant, obtained 139 votes.

How the wedding of Joe Appiah and a British lady stirred the world in 1953

Spencer Tracy Poitier

Joe Appiah was educated at Wesley College, Mfantsipim, and the Middle Temple.

Joe Appiah from Gold Coast (now Ghana), the first Ghanaian to marry (Lady Peggy Cripps) from the British Empire`s Upper class.

Early Life

Mr. Joe Appiah, born Joseph Emmanuel Appiah on Nov. 16, 1918 in Kumasi, was known as Joe in politics and used the shorter name as the author of several books.

He was a Ghanaian lawyer, politician and statesman born in Kumasi to Nana James Appiah and Nana Adwoa Akyaa, members of the Ashanti imperial aristocracy.

His father was a schoolmaster, Methodist leader, traditional nobleman and, finally, Chief Secretary of Asanteman, a position his son would also subsequently occupy.

Joe Appiah was educated at Wesley College, Mfantsipim, and the Middle Temple.

Marriage Life

In 1951, Joe Appiah met Lady Peggy Cripps at a student dance. She was the daughter of the Right Honourable Sir Stafford Cripps and Dame Isobel Cripps.

She was born on May 21 1921. Peggy Cripps was then working for an organisation called racial unity, after having lived in Moscow, where her father was a British ambassador, and in Tehran, where she worked for the British army (railways).

In 1953 in London, Mr. Appiah, a law student from a prominent Ashanti family in what is now Ghana, married Peggy Cripps.

It was then unheard of that an African will dare to marry a white lady from the British upper class family.

When it was announced that the 32-year-old Peggy was to marry a black man, every Colonel Blimp in the Empire was horrified.

Disgusting! That was how the apartheid South African minister of justice, Charles Swart described the marriage between Joe Appiah and Peggy Cripps.

During that period in Britain, interracial marriages were largely absent and a white girl who was seen out with a black man was deemed not “respectable”.

It was reported that Kwame Nkrumah (who would later be Ghana’s first president) was supposed to be Appiah’s best man, but George Padmore, the Pan-Africanist, journalist and author took up that role.

At the Church of England ceremony, the bride wore a gown of mother of pearl-embroidered silk brocade.

The bridegroom, a Methodist, wore a tribal ceremonial garment – similar to a toga – of yellow and green striped silk.

This sensational love affair inspired the 1967 Hollywood comedy-drama movie “Guess who’s Coming to Dinner ” starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn, and featuring Hepburn’s niece Katharine Houghton.

Return to Gold Coast

Joe Appiah,Peggy and their four kids

Their firstborn child, Prof Anthony Kwame Appiah (now world renowned Professor of philosophy and co-author of Encyclopedia Africana ), was born in London in 1954, followed by three daughters.

The Appiah family returned to Ghana in late 1954. Soon after, Joe Appiah’s friendship with Nkrumah was ruined.

Mr. Appiah was for several years the personal representative in London of the Ghanaian leader, Kwame Nkrumah, during the campaign for independence of what was then the Gold Coast. It became independent from Britain as Ghana in 1957.

But Mr. Appiah broke with Mr. Nkrumah and became prominent in the West African nation’s political opposition.

He was a member of the Ghanaian Parliament when he was arrested and detained, under the Preventive Detention Act, in 1961 and 1962.

He joined the National Liberation Movement party and won the Atwima-Amansie seat in 1957.

From 1970 to 1972 he was chairman of a new opposition party, the Justice Party, formed in 1970 through the merger of the country’s three opposition parties.

At that time, he was also president of the Ghana Bar Association.

Under later national leaderships, He went on to become Ghana’s representative at the United Nations in 1977 and 1978 and held other official posts.

Works of Peggy

Meanwhile, Peggy learned the language of the Asante, Twi, and became conversant with their folklore which influenced her to write several books such as Yao and the Python.

(1971); The Children of Ananse (1968); Why There Are So Many Roads (1972); Ananse the Spider: Tales from an Ashanti Village (1966); Kyekyekulee, Grandmother’s Tales (1993) and The Lost Earring (1971).

Her last major work was a collection of 7,000 Asante proverbs entitled Bu Me Be (Tell Me a Proverb) which she co-authored with her son Kwame, and Ivor Agyemang-Duah, currently information officer at the Ghana high commission in London.

At the same time as immersing herself in Asante art and culture, Peggy Cripps became a philanthropic figure in Kumasi and founded, with the assistance of her children, a school for the disabled at Jachie. She also contributed to the education of many children in Kumasi.

Death

Joe Appiah died in Accra after an illness and was buried at the Tafo cemetery at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana July 8, 1990.

Peggy Cripps bought a plot at Tafo cemetery in Kumasi, so that when she died, she would not be sent back to England, but be buried next to her husband, who died in 1990. She died in February 11, 2006.

We do not need any private partnership – Airport Workers’ Union

Airport Workers’ Union protesting against an alleged privatization of the comapny

The leadership of Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) Workers’ Unions has protested against alleged privatization of the company.

Reports have been rife in the media over government’s intention to cede the management of the country’s main airport to a private company, but the aviation ministry has refuted such claims.

Urging the public to disregard the reports, sector Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda said government was, however, deliberating with stakeholders including the GACL a proposed Strategic Partnership Arrangement between GACL and TAV-SUMMA Consortium to improve service delivery and expansion of infrastructure at the Airport.

This, he said, was to help achieve the Government’s vision of making Ghana the Aviation Hub within the West African Sub-Region.

Senior officer at the GACL, Amon Kotey, told GhanaWeb that the workers are kicking against the privatization move because they may lose certain benefits.

“We do not need any partnership thing. That is the more reason why we called for this demonstration. You know if a private man comes in, the salary structure will be changed. Benefits will seize. The bone of contention here is that we do not need it at all. All staff are going to fight against this move”

“If I recall most companies that get privatized have nothing for staff, they may ask staff to go home. I do not think it is necessary for the GACL to be privatized or partnered. We are going to support the union to fight this move,” he stated.

General Secretary of the Public Service Workers Union, Trades Union Congress, Bernard Agyei, addressing the protesting staff raised concerns about the need to agitate.

According to him, although there is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to initiate discussions on some proposals to hand over parts of the Airport to a private entity, an agreement is yet to be reached.

“We have been confronted with such a situation so as responsible citizens of this country and a responsible union we are using the structures and all the avenues and resources available to us to deal with this matter.

“There will be an engagement with the union for us to state our position on the matter. What we want to assure you is that we will not sit down and allow anything to be done to the detriment of workers.”

He assured that workers that when the time comes for them to meet government on the issue, their concerns will be raised.

“When we go to the negotiating table, we will advance your position that the airport can be and will be run by Ghanaians,” he added.

WHO confirms there’s ’emerging evidence’ of airborne transmission of coronavirus

Coronavirus has affected economies, claimed lives

The World Health Organization confirmed there is “emerging evidence” of airborne transmission of the coronavirus following the publication of a letter Monday signed by 239 scientists that urged the agency to be more forthcoming about the likelihood that people can catch the virus from droplets floating in the air.

Dr. Benedetta Alleganzi, WHO Technical Lead for Infection Prevention and Control, said during a briefing Tuesday, that the agency has discussed and collaborated with many of the scientists who signed the letter.

“We acknowledge that there is emerging evidence in this field, as in all other fields regarding the Covid-19 virus and pandemic and therefore we believe that we have to be open to this evidence and understand its implications regarding the modes of transmission and also regarding the precautions that need to be taken,” Alleganzi said.

Infectious disease epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkove, with WHO’s Health Emergencies Program, said many of the letter’s signatories are engineers, “which adds to growing knowledge about the importance of ventilation, which we feel is very important.”

“We have been talking about the possibility of airborne transmission and aerosol transmission as one of the modes of transmission of Covid-19, as well as droplet. We’ve looked at fomites. We’ve looked at fecal oral. We’ve looked at mother to child. We’ve looked at animal to human, of course as well,” Van Kerkove said.

She said the agency is working on a scientific brief summarizing the current knowledge around transmission of the deadly virus, which should be available in the coming weeks.

Alleganzi emphasized more research is still needed on Covid-19 transmission.

“So, these are fields of research that are really growing and for which there is some evidence emerging but is not definitive,” she said.

“And therefore, the possibility of airborne transmission in public settings, especially in very specific conditions crowded, closed, poorly ventilated settings that have been described cannot be ruled out. However, the evidence needs to be gathered and interpreted.”

The story of Shina Rambo, the most notorious armed robber in Nigeria’s history

Shina RamboShina Rambo is a former bandit who terrorized Nigeria in the 1990s

Shina Rambo is a former bandit who terrorized Nigeria in the 1990s. After serving jail-time for his crimes, he was converted by an evangelist and became a Christian evangelical pastor.

Shina Rambo now Mathew Oluwanifemi was a name that sent shivers down the spine of people who lived in the South West of Nigeria and even outside Nigeria, like Benin Republic and neighbourhood, in the 1990s.

A man mountain, towering about 6 ft 5inch, well built, dark-skinned and sweltering eyes, he carried out his operations, like a movie, in the broad daylight, with sophisticated weapons, and bullet belts and explosives strapped roundabout him.

He specialized in robbing exotic cars on highways and robbing banks. Nothing could stop him, not even security operatives, he was totally invincible. He was Shina Rambo! He was born in the year 1958 to a military man who was a bad egg in the service.

His father was from Abeokuta in Ogun state, but his mother was a native of Sabongida–Ora in Edo state. His father had over 18 wives, as was the norm for soldiers to impregnate virtually every woman they met where they were posted to.

His father used his military influence to rob innocent citizens, and always brought a huge amount of money home. This used to entice little Shina. He recalls, “I remembered when I was about 7 years old, my father came home with a lot of money, foreign currencies, with blood on it and they were using something like a woman’s scarf to wipe it, then I asked him, is this an animal’s blood, or human blood? But he wouldn’t answer me, they were just drinking, smoking, and merry-making.

Shina was already indoctrinated into the underworld by his father at a tender age of 7 without him knowing it, as he would sit in front of his son, to dismantle and assemble all sorts of weapons and then polishing them in preparation for an operation.

This went on for so long till one day, little Shina, entered into his father’s room while he had stepped into the toilet, and saw a dismembered gun on the floor. He sat down in front of it, and bit by bit, he had assembled it effortlessly in no time at all.

His father came out of the toilet, and saw his son, with a loaded gun in his hands. Shina flashed back and said, “That day my father was so disappointed, that he wanted to kill me, he grabbed the gun from my hand and shot straight at me, but I miraculously escaped out of the room.

Then he waited for me to be less alert at night he came to my room with a machete and tried to behead me, but once again, I escaped, but the machete caught my left leg (he rolled up his trousers to show us the large scar, that made everyone sighed in pity).

That day I knew I had graduated, all that was left was to pull the trigger, and I was so eager. Shina became so notorious in no time and was hell-bent on succeeding in his career as an armed robber, that he went through any length to secure spiritual powers for fortification.

To the extent of pounding over 27 live newborn babies in the mortar with a pestle, cutting off about 100 human tongues and cooking them to eat, visiting the spiritual river called river of life in Ogoja, Cross Rivers State, living in an Iroko tree, and sleeping in the cemetery.

He was given a spiritual wife who always followed him for any operation, she dressed like an Alhaja, people thought she was human, that was why they never saw her face. He said she was his personal driver, that she could drive from Nigeria to Cotonou, in the speed of light.

He said. ”I was involved in so many rituals, that I can’t start naming them now, I was so powerful, I went underground, inside trees that looked like a city, a lot of beautiful houses inside the tree, I had my own too, where a lot of politicians and wealthy men used to come.

I had several personalities, I could change my form whenever I wanted to, that’s why the police were busy killing innocent people and thought they were killing Shina Rambo.

The 9 herbalists that gave me that power, I became stronger than them, one day I went to their shrines, and killed all of them so that they don’t reveal my secrets. I had too many powers; my spiritual wife could drive any car in this world or out of it, no police vehicle, or anyone for that matter, could ever chase and catch me during an operation. She was out of this world, and when she had completed her operation, they took her away from me. I could give anything to get powers, and the elders knew, so they also gave me anything I wanted.

I once beheaded a hundred men, and gave them the heads fresh, they were so happy with me that they made me invincible. No matter the kind of bullet you shot at me, it was just like pure water on my body. I could give anything to get power, but of all the things I did to get power, the one that still breaks my heart the most is sleeping with my mother. My father is dead now, but my mother is still alive, and she lives with me she is 85 years old. Whenever I set my eyes on her, I just start crying. I can’t bear it.

Shina Rambo was a raging terror, he was infallibly dangerous, the police dreaded him, both in Nigeria, and Benin Republic, his place of interest for business. He would go to police stations. in broad daylight and kill every policeman there.

He once robbed 40 exotic cars in one day and drove all of them in a convoy, from Lagos to Cotonou, unstopped. He was powerful; he was wealthy and impenetrable. He was a tin god, apparently belched from the very arroyo hell, we all dreaded him.

He had a wife and three children, but he lost all of them in one day during a bloody police raid whilst he was away on an operation. His wife was his stabilizing factor his life changed afterward. He says “my wife was everything to me.

I will go back home to my wife and sleep with her. That was why the police never caught me. She knew my job, she knew what I was and I never left them alone at night, I operated in the day time and go back home to my family at night.

I had everything, I was very wealthy, I sometimes spent 50 million Naira in a day, I did that a lot. There was one day that we were coming from an operation and it seemed as if my powers were going to fail me, the police and the army were almost closing in on us, so we had to drive into a crowd and threw millions of naira in the air, there was a commotion, everybody was busy picking naira notes even the police until we escaped.

I was too rich, but anything the devil gives you never lasts, he will collect more from you, it’s only the devil that will give you cap and ask for wrapper and top. I lost everything, all the money, my family.

I was so powerful the police couldn’t catch me but I lost it all. I had to surrender myself to the police and I was arrested and jailed for 11 years.

While I was serving my jail term in Agodi prisons, Ibadan, Prophet T.O Obadare came visiting and having been encouraged several times by the Christian brothers and sisters in the prison to give my life to Christ, he prayed for me and converted me, and changed my name to Femi and it was so miraculous, the next day I woke up and started speaking in tongues. It was during the time of President Olusegun Obasanjo, that we were granted freedom.

At this point, I was glued to my seat, the revival where Shina Rambo gave this exclusive confession was on an open ground revival in the ancient city of Ibadan. Right in front of me, on stage, was Evangelist Mathew Oluwanifemi
