NPP is bogus – Kennedy Agyapong flares over contracts

Member of Parliament for Assin Central constituency, Kennedy Agyapong

Member of Parliament(MP) for the Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong, has described the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a bogus political party.

According to him, the party has given out all Ashanti regions road contracts to one Kofi Job who openly insulted the then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo using all sorts of unprintable adjectives and said he will never become President.

Kennedy Agyapong who was speaking on ‘The Seat’ show which airs on Accra-based Net2TV recalled that prior to Akufo-Addo winning the Presidency, the said Kofi Job described him [Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo] as ‘an ugly man with a broken mouth that cannot contain even milk’.

“When I hear the name Kofi Job, I get infuriated. Kofi Job fought with Kyeremanteng Agyarko and described the President as an ugly man who has a broken mouth that cannot hold milk when poured into it.”

“But now he’s the favourite and the President can pat him on the back, then I keep asking myself, does he know what this guy said?”

Kenya’s Growing Motorbike Taxi Industry Lifts Backward Economies

A booming motorbike transport industry in Kenya has lifted economies of various rural and urban centers, with the machines imported mainly from China changing the destiny of many. Across rural Kenya, economies of most of the regions now whirl around the motorbikes.

It is a similar case in many urban areas where motorbikes have helped upgrade 24-hour economy and ease transportation of goods and people. Nahashon Kiarie is a motorbike taxi operator in Kitengela, a rapidly growing suburb on the south of Nairobi.
In rural areas, that the Chinese-made machines have transformed lives is evident. Most young people who ordinarily would have been idle and be lured to crime are now engaged in the motorbike transport industry.
Juma Otiato, a resident of Budalangi in Busia western Kenya, struggled to eke a living for years until he was employed as a motorbike taxi rider three years ago, was earning 3 dollars a day. His hard work and loyalty saw him buy a second-hand motorbike two months ago making him his own boss. “As long as you have a motorbike, you cannot lack food and other needs,” he said.
The rise in the number of motorbikes which go for between 700 dollars and 1,000 dollars has created leads for spare parts sellers and repairers of the machines, with the shops dotting most rural trading centers.
Motorbikes has bcome the most bought motor vehicles in the east African nation, with new registrations standing at over 200,000 annually, as said by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
Chinese motorcycles account for over 50 percent of Kenya’s motorbike market, with the machines investing million dollars daily into the economy, according to Kenya Boda Boda Association.
The association notes its members drive huge fuel sales, each spending up to 5 dollars on fuel daily. Ernest Manuyo, a business lecturer at Pioneer Institute acknowledged that motorbikes have developed new economic statuses for regions and individuals.
There are close to a million motorbike taxis in Kenya, with each earning an average of 5 dollars a day. “That means up 5 million dollars is circulated into the economy a day. This is significant,” he said.

Central Bank of Kenya vindicates Bawumia on mobile money interoperability

Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The Vice President of Ghana Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been vindicated by the Central Bank of Kenya over his claims that Ghana’s Interoperability is unique in Africa and that no African country has been able to implement what Ghana has done.

The Mobile Money Payment is the service, which allows direct and seamless transfer of funds from one mobile money wallet to another mobile money wallet across networks, which was developed by Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) with the active collaboration of the Mobile Industry.

The First Phase of the two phases of the interoperability payments system customers was able to move monies freely from mobile money accounts across different networks and from their mobile money accounts to bank accounts without any hassle.

The second phase has also allowed the movement of monies between and among telecommunication operators, banks, and e-zwitch accounts in a seamless manner –and the flow is vice versa, to complete the Financial Inclusion Triangle.

Dr. Bawumia while speaking on Accra-based Peace FM stated that the introduction of the mobile interoperability into the financial space has facilitated the transaction of funds from the phone to a bank account with ease.

While speaking on digitisation, Dr Bawumia said, “Banking is now branchless…it is taking place on mobile phones and so having this mobile interoperability, it means that even if you have a mobile money account, you send it to your bank account and someone can send you money from the bank account to the mobile money wallet. So, the way we use current account in the bank, you can use the mobile account the same way… Ghana is the only country in Africa to do mobile interoperability.”

However, the Vice President who was touting this achievement as being the best and only system in Africa that allows the second phase of the interoperability during an interview on Accra-based Peace FM was challenged with claims that same system is happening in Kenya.

But a Press Release from the Central Bank of Kenya indicates that Kenya’s interoperability is between wallets of the same telecommunication companies and not from mobile telecommunication wallets to bank wallets.

“The benefits of “wallet-to-wallet” interoperability to customers will be immediate andsignificant. Customers wishing to transfer money across networks will avoid the cost and inconvenience of needing to reload or withdraw money through network agents. Customers’ mobile wallets will reflect funds immediately these are received, regardless of the network from which these funds are sent. Customers will also be able to withdraw the money in their wallets from the agents on their network, as is

currently,” the statement from the Kenya Central Bank said.

Dr Bawumia also said mobile money interoperability, before the NPP came into power, the erstwhile Mahama administration had awarded the contract for $1.2 billion.

“When we came, there was a contract to do the interoperability and that contract was to be done for $1.2 billion but at the end of the day, we looked at it, there were conditions that were not yet satisfied and the Bank of Ghana terminated the contract and instead of spending $1.2 billion to do mobile interoperability, we spent $4.5 million.”

Disclosing the gains of the mobile interoperability the Vice President said “Since 2018, when we did interoperability, Ghana has become the fastest-growing mobile money market in Africa, the fastest-growing and it is just very remarkable.”

“Today, mobile money transactions, as of 2019, was 200 million transactions.”

“If you look at banking transactions for 2019, it was 599,000…so, mobile money has been turned on its head now. Mobile money is more used than your traditional bank as banking transactions are only three per cent of the total,” the Vice President disclosed.

State honours war veteran Joseph Hammond

Social Honourary Conferment 3Private Joseph Ashitey Hammond was promoted to Warrant Officer Class One

Ghana on Monday promoted war veteran and ex-serviceman, Private Joseph Ashitey Hammond, to the rank of Warrant Officer Class One (WO1), for his patriotic exploits and continuous service to the nation.

The honour was conferred on him by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, on July 20 this year, following his recent humanitarian efforts.

The war veteran, 95, in June this year, embarked on a two-kilometre walk a day for seven days to raise funds to support COVID-19 frontline workers and vulnerable veterans.

This earned him the “Commonwealth Points of Light Award” from the British Queen, an award he is yet to receive at an official ceremony at the British High Commission in Accra.

At a ceremony to officially confer the State Honour on Private (Pte) Ashitey Hammond, Mr Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister of Defence, described as exemplary the activities of the ex-serviceman over the years.

He said Pte Ashitey Hammond, even as a retiree, continued to contribute to the development of the country.

“In contemporary times, this gallant veteran has been an Ambassador for Veterans Association of Ghana, touring some schools in the Accra Metropolis to educate students and pupils on not just Ghana’s history, but the virtues of patriotism,” Mr Nitiwul said.

It was in view of these exceptional contributions and sacrifices of the war veteran that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, Nana Akufo-Addo, deemed it right and appropriate to confer on him the Honourary Rank of Warrant Officer Class One, he said.

“It is my hope and belief that this will motivate and encourage others to strive and emulate his achievements.”

Ex-Pte Ashitey, 95, was a Second World War veteran and was among a group of ex-servicemen who marched to the Osu Castle on February 28, 1948, to present a petition to the then Governor of the Gold Coast.

This led to the shooting and the death of three servicemen; Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and Private Odartey.

Mr Nitiwul said even though the welfare of veterans had improved over the past three years, government was committed to ensuring that their welfare, particularly ex-officers, improved further in the coming years.

He commended the Military High Command and the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) for their selfless service to the nation.

Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa, the Chief of the Defence Staff, described the work of the ex-serviceman as exceptional and worth emulating.

He added that honours and awards were means of recognising service of outstanding officers beyond the normal demand of duty.

He said the honour would, therefore, boost the morale of serving officers, adding; “It is hoped that the current generation of Ghanaians will continue to work hard to change the country for the better whether they are in or out of uniform.”

Major General Clayton Yaache, the Board Chair of VAG, expressed profound gratitude to the President, the Minister of Defence, and the Chief of the Defence Staff for the unique honour not only to the recipient but to all veterans.

He appealed to them to continue to recognise and appreciate veterans for their past service and contribution to the state to encourage young officers to give off their best.

WO1 Ashitey Hammond, on his part, expressed appreciation to the President, the Military High Command, and VAG for making this a reality.

He assured the state of his continuous service in any capacity for the betterment of the country and the continent at large.

He further urged Ghanaians to adopt the spirit of patriotism and work to enhance the image of the country globally.

Students say the food is not tasty

Students of St. Cyprian’s Anglican JHS ‘A’ in Kumasi today, Monday, 24 August 2020, rejected President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo‘s free hot meal served them.

One of them said: “We thought they were going to serve us good food. Nana Akufo-Addo should abrogate the contract with the caterer and give it to my mother, she can cook it.”

Some of the students who collected the food threw it away after their first taste.

The students, however, did not blame the President for the poor food but the caterer who was given the contract.

The headmaster of the school, Mr Stephen Adjei, said the food was delivered to all the 55 students but the teachers were neglected.

69337771Madina ‘spiderman’ in action

A man speculated to be in his late 20s has been captured in photos risking his life by climbing a ladder to the very top of the Baptist Senior High School storey building at Madina, Accra, to sneak answers through the window to students who were sitting the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to an eyewitness, the man had answered the exam questions on a piece of paper and used daredevil stunts à la spiderman to smuggle it to the students in the exam hall on Thursday, 20 August 2020.

“…I saw a guy on the first floor. He was hiding there with a paper in his hands”, the eyewitness recounted.

He continued: “Initially, I didn’t know what he was doing there, so, I got curious because the place is very risky; you can just fall off.

“I realised he was trying to get the paper to someone in the class while they were writing exams,” he told Class91.3FM’s mid-day news 12Live anchored by Kofi Oppong Asamoah on Friday, August 21, 2020.

This year’s WASSCE has been characterised by violence, indiscipline, vandalism, leaked papers as well as suspension and dismissal of students among others.
