While details of his death and possible murder are sketchy at this moment, his colleague at the Faculty, Poku Adusei, has given a chilling account of the Professor’s death.

Poku Adusei in a Facebook post on Saturday, September 12, 2020, said the respected Law Professor was “murdered” in the same fashion as the late Abuakwa North MP, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu.

“It appears to be an act perpetuated about three days ago, but it was just discovered this morning,” he said of the unfortunate incident at late Prof Benneh’s Adjirigano mansion.

Unconfirmed reports suggest he was found in a pool of blood with his hands and legs tied.

“The gardener then went to inform his [Prof Benneh’s] sister who does not live far away from the house. They went for a carpenter to force the door open,” he continued.

Nigerian state approves castration of convicted rapists

The state assembly in Kaduna, in north-western Nigeria, has approved full surgical castration as punishment for those convicted of rape.

State commissioner for woman’s affairs and social development, Hafsat Baba, described the approval by the state assembly as a “welcome development” and said that it will serve as “deterrent” for rapists.

State governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai will now need to sign the bill for it to become law in the state.

In June Nigerian governors declared a state of emergency over rape and violence against women and children in the country.

The number of successful prosecutions of rape suspects remains low and stigma often prevents victims from reporting incidents.

I don’t have any issue with Stonebwoy, I only wanted to trend – Samini

Dancehall artiste, Samini

Award Winning Raggae/Dancehall artiste, Samini has opened up on his social media rants on the ‘Asaase Sound Clash’ involving Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale.

Samini, who was seen registering his displeasure in videos he shared on social media disclosed his motive when he was interviewed by DJ Seani B on Asaase Radio.

According to Samini, he rants on social media was a strategic move to help him trend and become relevant.

“My rants on social media about the clash was to have me trend, and I achieved that. It was my smart way to get involved as well. There is still unfinished business between me and Shatta Wale. I wasn’t surprised to see Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale names come up for the Sound Clash. My longevity in the game is good reason enough to include me in Sound Clash such as this one. I don’t see the reason why anyone would disagree with me on this,” Samini revealed.

He added: “I don’t see me and Stonebwoy having a ‘head on’ sound clash in a competitive bout because ‘Father & Son’ don’t have to do that, perhaps it would have to be a family vibe sort of with Stonebwoy on the microphone; if anything between me and Stonebwoy on the microphone it will be more like a party clash and not anything so serious. It still remains a family thing between me and Stonebwoy forever. HighGrade Family and Bhim Nation are family forever and I won’t change that narrative.”

Samini however applauded Asaase Radio for bringing together the two most controversial artiste in Ghana.

“I am proud of the genre I am part of. Aside my concerns raised, I am singularly excited about this. It is the best thing to ever happen in the history of Ghanaian Reggae/Dancehall music. And the bigger reason for the clash which is to crush COVID-19 even makes me doff my hat for Asaase Radio 99.5fm,” he stated.

NDC’s four months maternity leave policy may lead to unemployment of women in private sector – LRI

The institute has called for a discussion between labour stakeholders on the matter

The Labour Rights Institute despite having welcomed the promise made by the National Democratic Congress in their manifesto to extend maternity leave to four months has cautioned that the policy may lead to private sector employers shying away from engaging the service of women.

In order to forestall such a situation, the institute has called for a discussion between labour stakeholders on the need for government to take up part of the cost employers may incur through a tax deduction agreement.

In a statement issued by its Executive Coordinator, Mohammed Affum, the LRI said the extension from three months to four months will be an improvement in line with the International Labour organizations Convention 2000, which grants a maternity leave of 14 weeks for mothers and additional two weeks where two or more babies are born.

The Institute emphasized that some private business employers do not engage women due to the cost incurred during maternity leave where a new person has to be employed to temporary fill up the vacancy.

“These practices are unfair as maternity should not constitute a source of discrimination in employment, including access to employment.” The LRI observed.

The Institute thus impressed on all stakeholders to recognize maternity protection measures.

“The body of the woman undergoes changes during pregnancy and childbirth and she needs a sufficient time to rest and for the body to heal as well as time to allow for exclusive breastfeeding to babies for their survival and healthy development to replenish labour for productive work,” the Institute stated.

Orgernya residents climb hill to make and receive calls

NETWORK 1.jpegResidents in Orgernya, Klo Djerkiti trying to make calls

Residents in Orgernya, Klo Djekiti and over 20 other surrounding farming communities in Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern region do not have access to mobile network services.

A house on a hilltop is the only place residents could access a very weak network signal of MTN hence the house has become a call centre where calls are made and received by inhabitants in the village.

A small wooden structure erected in the middle of the house is where the network signal can only be accessed. Residents have to stand behind it without moving an inch to make calls in turns.

A mobile phone holder has been fixed under the structure where a mobile phone can be placed to make emergency calls when raining.

For those who have scheduled to receive calls, their mobile phones are put on top of the wooden structure to await calls from their families, Children and customers.

A visit to the village by Starr News saw some residents trudge to the house to make calls while others were hanging around waiting to receive calls ahead of scheduled time.

The walls of a wooden structure in the house has been inundated with mobile numbers “saved” on the walls by residents for easy access and dialling.

“Access to mobile network services here is very difficult. There is no network coverage so this house on a hilltop is where we all come from our homes to make calls. You have to stand like a statue behind this structure to be able to make calls, “a resident told Starr News.

“When we book appointment with traders to supply them vegetables and maybe something happens which the trader is not able to come to the market because of network challenge she is not able to inform us so you will harvest your farm produce but she will not be present to buy then you have to sell it cheap else it will rot” another farmer lamented.

Agbertey Tetteh a Chief in the area said “sometimes when there is emergency like a woman in labour or someone is critically ill, you have to call people to come and help either bring motorbike or carry her to hospital but there is no network bso you have to run to this place to make that call”

“For those of us who have children in school, we schedule a time with them when to call so we come here to wait for their calls. Sometimes you have to wait for long hours before the call comes through. Our biggest challenge is during snake bite where we have to get people to rush the victim to the hospital”.

A major road from Oborpah to Orgenya Djekiti has deteriorated hence not motorable. The no network coverage deepens the woes of residents who feel disconnected from the rest of the country.

The situation is also affecting healthcare delivery.

“Network is very difficult so you have to be roaming till you get to a point sometimes when you get to the junction at the top there it is quite a distance before you can get that access to make phone call. It affects productivity you have to struggle a lot to just attend to something small that if everything is around you can just attend to it within a shortest possible time and if complications sets in then you are in trouble” Salomey Okpoti Senior Community Nurse at Klo Djekiti told Starr News.

Although Ghana has the highest mobile penetration in West Africa and already outperforms many of its regional peers with 16.7 million unique mobile subscribers, 15.1 million smartphone devices and 10.7 million mobile internet users in the country as of third quarter of 2019, many rural communities are still not able to access mobile network services.

Orgernya Djekiti and its surrounding communities in Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern region are among those farming communities struggling to access mobile network services a situation affecting agribusiness, Health and Education.

The Sustainable development Goal 9 enjoins countries to building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation, particularly through increasing access to ICT.

Ken Agyapong’s conduct graver than Montie three – Prof Naana Opoku-Agyemang

Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang

Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang says the law must deal with Kennedy Ohene Agyapong for insulting a High Court judge.

According to the running mate to John Dramani Mahama, the judiciary must crack the whip on the Assin Central MP, adding that the lawmaker must face the music just as the infamous Montie Trio.

She said that the law in 2016 dealt with the Montie Trio when they committed the same offence until the former President, John Dramani Mahama granted them clemency.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang who had an interaction with Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) officials noted that it will be fair for the MP to be at least tried in court.

She said: “If you are going to talk about name and shame, it should be consistent. If you are going to apply the laws, it should be consistent.”

She continued: “So, if another person does the same and just comes to apologise so end of story. That is corruption and I want to see that also highlighted because we are not allowing us to abide by the rules of telling the truth.

So, these are the things that we should be very focused on in order to move [forward] otherwise it creates a kind of solipsism among the youth and that is dangerous because they are the future.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further described the conduct of the Kennedy Agyapong as lawless and worse than the infamous Montie Trio.

“Your Lordship, that, Mr Agyapong’s conduct is graver in scope and impact than the infamous ‘Montie Three’. This is because of the influence he wields and the coverage of the channel on which he made these dangerous comments compared to the ‘Montie Three’ in these respects.”

Kennedy Agyapong on Net 2 TV on Wednesday, September 2, used very harsh language to express his anger over a decision by a judge to grant an injunction against him without allegedly conducting due diligence.

The NPP MP said he had a vendetta against judges in the country who abuse their power in their line of duty and threatened to “face the judge” who gave the verdict.

Agyapong subsequently, on Monday September 7, ahead of his scheduled 14 September appearance in court, rendered an unqualified apology, to the Chief Justice, the Association of Judges and Magistrates, and the Judiciary as a whole.

Lotto fraudsters busted in Volta Region

Lotto Criminals ArrestedThe four accused persons

The National Lottery Authority(NLA) in collaboration with the Volta Regional Police Command have successfully arrested four lotto fraudsters in the Volta Region.

The Circuit Court in Ho presided over by His Honor, Felix Datsomor has remanded the suspects in police custody to re-appear on 23/9/2020.

The lotto fraudsters have created several Facebook accounts, Whatsapp platforms and other social media platforms using the logo and pictures of the Staff of the National Lottery Authority(NLA) and sometimes pictures of other people to defraud the unsuspecting public.

How they operate

The lotto fraudsters receive various sums of money from their victims in order to stake lotto numbers for them. After the Draw of the lotto numbers by the National Lottery Authority(NLA), the Lotto Fraudsters send photographs of FAKE Winning Coupons(Prize) to their victims suggesting that they have won lotto.

Subsequently, after the victims pay the lotto fraudsters with the percentage of the fake winning prize, the fraudsters then quickly block the phone calls of their victims and vanish.

Sometimes, the lotto fraudsters manage to convince their victims to send money for Registration to qualify for the leaked winning numbers.

NLA cautions public

The spokesperson of the NLA, Razak Kojo Opoku has meanwhile reminded the public to be very vigilant and report activities such persons.

He said that NLA has not designed any registration form for the registration of lotto numbers.

“The National Lottery Authority(NLA) would like to state categorically that, NLA has NOT designed any Registration Forms for the public to register for winning lotto numbers”.

“The outcome of Lotto Draws are conducted in an open and transparent manner and the Draw is open to the general public for witnessing daily, except Sundays and public holidays”.

“It is absolutely false that people and staff of the Authority have access to winning lotto numbers”.

“The National Lottery Authority(NLA) would like to commend the Volta Regional Police Headquarters for a successful operation. The Authority shall continue to collaborate with the Police and other relevant security agencies to arrest the Lotto Fraudsters across the Country”.

“However, it is the responsibility of the public to be more vigilant and discontinue engaging the services of the lotto fraudsters”.

Govt begins Stakeholder consultations on ‘Okada’ legalisation – Transport Minister reveals

Former President John Mahama believes Okada business has reduced unemployment

Transport Minister, Kweku Ofori Asiamah, says the NPP government has begun stakeholder consultations to decide on whether to review the law banning the commercial use of motorcycles or implement it.

“We as a government know that this is a matter that we need to take our time to confront the people, come out with their views and that, will determine the law that should be put in place,” Mr Asiamah stated.

He said laws are meant to be changed when needed depending on the times adding that if amending the law will be a better option, government will not hesitate to do so.

This comes after John Dramani Mahama in August promised his government will legalise the commercial operation of motorbikes popularly known as Okada if voted into power in 2021.

According to him, the Okada business has become a means of sustenance for young people who are unemployed.

His comments generated mixed reactions from Ghanaians with one section throwing their support behind it while another called for the implementation of the law banning the okada operation.

Senior Vice-President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, added his voice to the section of the public that is advocating for the legalisation of the commercial use of motorbikes.

Despite the foregoing debate, Kweku Asiamah said government’s decision to have a stakeholder consultation has nothing to do with the NDC.

He stated that government had started a conversation on reviewing the law in 2019.

“We are governing the nation so our activities are different from someone who is on a campaign trail. We are supposed to government this country to the best of our ability, and what will be in the interest of this country.”

Mr Asiamah stated that the stakeholders views after the consultations will influence the decision government takes.
