Following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s hint that it might happen in the future, the debate over renaming Ghana’s top university, the University of Ghana, has once more stirred a range of perspectives.
President Akufo-Addo made the intriguing statement at the 75th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the University of Ghana.
As a tribute to Joseph Boakye (J.B.) Danquah’s unyielding resolve and crucial role in inspiring the Ghanaian people to create the university, he made a suggestion that the esteemed institution should someday be renamed in his honor.
According to Nana Akufo Addo, the president of Ghana who praised his Uncle,J.B Danquah’s leadership, and lobbying style, the institution should be named after him for that reason.
He stated that such a gesture would not be rejected in a setting or community that values historical accuracy and the preservation of documents.
“It will be wholly appropriate and not at all far-fetched, to describe Joseph Boakye Dankwa as the founder of this university. A fact which on the 75th anniversary of its existence should be vividly recalled by all of us who have been and are beneficiaries of his work.
“Indeed, in many other jurisdictions where there is less heat in their politics and more attachment to the fact of historical record, it would not have been out of place to have this university named after him. Who knows, one day it may well happen.”
